Sleeping on Class 2 Shuttles

Noise

Newbie
New poster around here so, hi everyone.

In the Voyager episode "Drone", Tom Paris, while flying a Class 2 shuttle, mentions that "they used to shoehorn half a dozen cadets into one of these things for weeks at a time". Additionally, in "Once Upon a Time", the away mission is said to be going for "days", and they are in the Delta Flyer.

So my question is where the hell do they sleep on those shuttles? We see the exterior several times in the series and it is clear that the shuttles only have the one room in them.

Looking at the interior set, it seems that two people can sleep on the back benches and two on the piloting seats if need be.

However, I'd suppose the shuttle is a bit like today's caravans in that the interior configuration can be altered. Today, we use all sorts of fold-down or swing-out beds. In the 24th century, the natural thing would be to alter the direction of gravity, so that people could sleep on the walls in addition to using the "horizontal" surfaces.

As for "separate rooms" and the need for privacy, I don't think anybody would need that for sleeping. Caravans don't have privacy, either. "Delicate" individuals may use ear plugs, eye covers and whatnot.

The other privacy issue, that concerning toilets, is the more interesting one. Do shuttle pilots and passengers have to use a public toilet? Or is some sort of a privacy curtain erected for the purpose?

Dr McCoy: "You need to urinate? I can fix that."
*Slaps a hypospray on the offending crew member.*

-Kind of a Trek XI joke.

Does anyone remember in "Good Shepherd" were they out in a regular shuttle or the Delta Flyer? It appeared in that episode that there was a lower level to the shuttle (where the food prep area was) so perhaps there were bunks down there.

They're in the Delta Flyer in "Good Shepard."

Must admit, I've often wondered how they go to the bathroom! Surely McCoy's clever trick can't be healthy all the time for a fortnight? Sleeping is a lot easier to imagine, they could easily pull some sort of techno beds out from virtually nowhere. Like in the bedsit my dh used to live in :techman:

And beam bio waste into a recycler directly from the person's body? Sorry, that's getting obsessive! But I like facts, I like things to seem possible! And there's no damned loo!

...And still the craft lacks not just the aforementioned beds, but also a visible means of entry or exit.

It's possible to interpret the two separate sets (forward and aft section) as an internally consistent space that not only allows for the sets to connect with each other, but also features some sort of an aft ramp accessible from the aft section.

However, it isn't really possible to orient the aft set so that the "CAT scanner" tube inset into the side wall wouldn't protrude out into space...

Obviously it uses the same technology that allows the Galileo interior set to fit into the exterior!

The lack of visible toilet facilities in Star Trek, plus the references to "waste extraction" on DS9 suggest to me that in the 24th century, they don't need to sit on the can as we do. There's probably some nanotechnology that turns biological waste into a harmless, colourless gas, or some other means of simple disposal. Or they all wear 24th century nappies that deal with the yellow and brown in some clever way.

We know that they do have toilets though because there is an episode of Voyager (it might be 'Night' or some other one where they were conserving power) where Neelix tells the captain that they only have 2 operation lavatories and that lines are starting to form. Clearly the crew members need to go to the toilet.

ds9's 'explorers' explicitly mentions the loo on the bajoran space sailer sisko knocks together.

Ok, I'm gonna go for the idea of a kind of holographic closet that they can make appear when necessary! :rommie: Happy Christmas to all who celebrate :techman:

Yeah, but my idea is more fun.
