what if Data managed to separate the saucer section during ST:FC?

JamesSmith

Lieutenant Commander
what if Data managed to separate the saucer section while deactivating the stardrive section's self destruct sequence during Star Trek: First Contact?

What if the cast and crew broke into a samba during the final act?

What's your point?

It would = retread of the previous film.

The Borg would still have the more powerful section of the ship, and, probably, transporters, so they could just blow up the saucer or invade it.

After the saucer seperates, Picard would beam up a heavily hung over Deanna, short on bridge crew owing to combat with the Borg, Picard is forced to assign Deanna to the helm.

At which point Deanna rams the saucer section into the Earth.

after the Enterprise-E was separated and Data deactivated the stardrive section's self destruct sequence, the saucer section self-destructs over Earth, the Borg Queen turns away and yells at Data like in the movie, Picard fires his phaser rifle at the warp core coolant tank, killing all the Borg. But Picard managed to climb to the top just in time to vent the coolant. Zepham Cochrane still makes his historial warp flight and makes first contact with the Vulcans. The Enterprise-E stardrive section warps back to the 24th Century, Starfleet tells the crew what happened to the saucer section, Picard says the saucer section is lost during the conflict with the Borg while preventing the Borg from stopping first contact.

Sooo... it would be pretty much the same except it would have wasted time and money on superfluous effects shots and boring exposition.

Can the Enterprise E even seperate its saucer? I know there were concept designs for potential saucer section, but there's no canon evidence suggesting this is possible.

There's no canon evidence saucer separation, but according to John Eaves it was designed so that it was possible (e.g. the separation point is known).

Yeah, if you look at the model (the physical model as well as ALL of the CG models) it's very clear where the separation joint is. There's practically a canyon on the underside of the saucer. It can separate, it was just never shown to.

I find no reason why Data would separate the saucer in this instance, he would separate it just to blow it up? This makes no sense. It seems to serve no purpose except to say to the Borg Queen, "You get Engineering, but you'll never have the Bridge! Bwahahaha!" The Data realizes that no one will have the bridge, because he just blew it up.

I think Data should have transformed the Enterprise E into a giant robot, and shit the Borg out it's ass... resistance is fertilizer.
