Did Kirk's rather *enthusiastic* execution of Nero bug you?

Kirk.
Starfleet Captain.
Starfleet's finest.
....

Goofing on the guys he's about to kill...?

Not sorry for for believing he HAS to do it?

Has this alternate reality created a Kirk I can't look up to any more? Just another angry angsty texting post-teen that revels in his justifiable excesses?

Or did Nero REALLY ASK for it?

Two things to consider: Nero's crew, who were not given a choice, and, second, the fact that the ship was crippled and about to implode in the black hole. So Kirk essentially fired on an enemy ship no longer capable of destruction, and did not attempt more than a cursory offer of rescue to the crew. If I'd been on Nero's ship, I might have fragged Nero and said, yes Enterprise, please. I'll take my life in prison over a gruesome death.

^ The risk that the Narada would be pulled into the black hole and emerge *somewhere else* - just like it did before - was too great. Better to simply destroy the fucker and be done with it.

...But with a smile? Is that the message here? That killing evil is an enjoyable thing? Not a horrible task? Is this not pop-culture at its most shallow?

Just askin'.;)

No, Nero and his crew were none uniformed combatants who had committed acts of war. Kirks actions was just and practical.

You got it. Arm phasers, fire everything we've got.

Would you prefer he'd talked Nero down, made Nero realize how wrong he'd been, and make him willingly accept imprisonment with the hopes of maybe contributing positively to his new universe at some point in the future?

Sounds more like Snooze Trek to me.

So, Judge Dredd in space, eh?

A brave new Trek 'Verse.:(

No but its called killing drama to stop the action and hold a hearing on Nero's actions of war complete with incarceration on some reform colony for crimes against sentients. The audience would have left the movie disappointed if Kirk and Spock didn't finish Nero once and for all. They'd laugh their way out of the movie.

Unless I'm missing something? Nero murdered Spocks mom and Kirk's dad. Did you want Kirk and Spock to be regretful for being forced to stop Nero?

No, but at least a hint of regret at what he felt needed to be done would have been nice.
When was the last time you killed a violent mugger that left you smiling, might I ask?:wtf:

Okay, this is a too much. Kirk made far more than a "cursory offer" of assistance. He stated clearly the situation Nero was in and made it clear Nero's only rational option was to surrender. Nero spat in his face, and Kirk saw to it that Nero and his powerful Borg-enhanced starship could not travel to another timeline. And Nero really had it coming.

Last Tuesday, when I was in Reno.

What, just to watch him die?

BTW, Nero's ship is only "Borg enhanced" in the comics. Doesn't matter whether it's the same writers or not, it's not part of the movie.

If anything, and even though we saw that Spock was very different here, his reaction was a little more surprising.

And though older, Kirk from ST4, having...had...enough...of...Kruge, and stomping on his face till he fell in the lava, wasn't too different. And that was the "good" Kirk who did grow up with a father.
