We all know Carey Mulligan is moving up

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama
1. Emily Blunt for The Young Victoria (2009)
2. Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side (2009)
3. Helen Mirren for The Last Station (2009)
4. Carey Mulligan for An Education (2009)
5. Gabourey 'Gabby' Sidibe for Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire (2009)

Didn't know she was seeing Shia.

Considering just about the only widespread buzz among actresses in that list is for Carey, I think this stands to be a walk for her (unless the press association gets leery about the subject matter of the movie).

I'm not sure why the film's subject matter -- a high school student in early 60s Britain gets involved with a much older con man -- would be a negative.

I think Gabourey Sidibe from "Precious" will win. She's got more buzz considering this is her first film ever.

It's the fact she wants to lose her virginity to a 30 year old on her 17th birthday that's the controversial part. Remember the US is the country where people were up in arms over David Letterman sleeping around. It's not as if there are people marching in the streets over this film or anything, but I've seen a number of stories on Carey that have included a variation of "she's a shoo-in for an Oscar, if the voters overlook the subject matter of her film."

Normally, at this point I would provide a bunch of links. I'll have to settle for just the one because my computer's javascript capability has been compromised and I don't have the time or energy for an OS reinstall right now: http://oscar-watch.ew.com/2009/10/06/carey-mulligan-controversy-an-education/

I have to agree, though, that the actress from Precious could be the spoiler for Carey both at the Globes and at the Oscars. I just checked and an American hasn't won Best Actress Oscar since Reese Witherspoon about 4 years ago. The same sort of politics that might make Oscar voters go "ick" over My Education (referencing a line in the article linked above) might also see them preferring an American actress for Best Actress, and the Oscars got so much positive buzz out of giving Supporting Actress to underdog Jennifer Hudson that one year, they might want to try it again. That "Up in the Air" film everyone is talking about and no one has seen is apparently lining up to be an 11th-hour juggernaut, too.

Two things.

The Golden Globes are voted on and awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. I doubt strenuously that foreign reporters are going to be swayed by American sexual morality.

Second, the voters for the Academy Awards tend to be more liberal than mainstream America.

I'm not saying you're incorrect, but to focus on one element of the story, which is about a young girl's coming-of-age, not about how she loses her virginity, to the exclusion of everything else about the film strikes me as silly.

Well, maybe she'll be nominated for an Oscar too and she can go for that particular golden statuette.

She's being awfully nice to that homeless guy. Most people just give pocket change.

What on earth has she done to her hair? She's so pretty, why would she do that? And...are those parachute pants?!

Also, Shia whatshisface has a camel toe in that first picture. Wasn't sure that was possible on a man, but apparently it is.

Well yesterday was the Golden Globes and Carey didn't win. Sandra Bullock won the globe.

Yeah, that "walkaway" I mentioned earlier doesn't seem as likely for Carey now as there's momentum building for Bullock, especially since she falls into the "actor who's paid her dues making crap movies for 20 years" category, whereas no one outside of Doctor Who fandom had heard of Carey before An Education came along, meaning there's more chances for her to score a nomination later.

I dunno, she can pull off the short hair. She's got the right frame for the pixie-style hairdo.

She's pretty talented; I'm sure there will be multiple opportunities for awards.
