To you Dexter fans out there, how would you react to…

Joe Washington

The possible reveal of Rita having a dark side not so unlike Dexter’s which we haven’t seen yet and which was around back when she was married the first time? And but because of what happened that ended that first marriage and Paul’s abusive treatment of her, her dark side was deeply suppressed to the point in which she became a completely different person?

I think it would be horribly contrived. I don't like when shows try to give every single character some dark secret to the point you're just left rolling your eyes, especially when there's no sign of it before. And especially not in a situation like this. Dexter's dark passenger should be the exception, not the rule. It's bad enough in the books that the kids have similar dark passengers.

I have long been curious about her first husband too, though.

Dexter got her first husband sent back to prison by planting some drugs on him and then he was killed in a prison fight.

That was Paul, the second husband. It was revealed (due to some awkward congrats card from her mother, in one episode close to the marriage) that Rita was married another time before Paul. Nothing is known about the first husband at this time.

Wouldn't that be making her sort of Lyta-esque? We've had Dexter involved with a dark girl before, and back then Rita was the comely, shining light of American virtues.

Anyway, if the good folk who write Dexter went for that twist, I'm sure they'd have an excellent reason for it.

If this reveal becomes a reality, the differences between Rita and Lila would be that Rita loves Dexter and isn't obsessed with him, that she wouldn't hurt her kids to have Dexter all for herself or to make him suffer, and that she never manipulated Dexter in order for their relationship to happen.

No shit.

Anyway, Rita needs to die. Quickly. Didn't take long for her to turn into the nagging wife. But she was a nagging girlfriend so I guess that was to be expected.

Ugh, that would be an untenable plot twist (and sounds eerily like some shit they'd pull on Heroes :rommie:). They can't do something like that going into S5 with absolutely no lead-up to it for four entire seasons.

However, here is what would be tenable: one of the "nice" characters, such as Rita or Deb, being maneuvered by clever writing into knowing what Dex does and not ratting him out. They don't need to be eeeevil to decide that their loyalty to Dex and understanding the mitigating circumstances behind his behavior trumps their adherence to the rule of law. Ultimately people relate to other people, not to abstractions like law and justice.

Indeed its gonna be a long wait till next season
poor rita, Are they gonna take a page outta the books and make the kid or kids have a dark passenger now
