Both of Diana Muldaur's characters were good in the positive regard, though - Miranda Jones was also a capable, confident character. One can see why they decided to bring her back for TNG.

To me, Miranda Jones was one of the most interesting guest characters in TOS - someone who was rejecting humanity and was totally cold to any of the human(oid) male advances - something that was really unusual to see in TOS - and was more interested in a spiritual relationship with a non-corporeal (?) alien. The entire episode is so unusual in its theme, and even visually at times - which is why it's one of my favorites. TOS did have interesting/strong guest star female characters occasionally - Miranda, Vina, Romulan Commander (although it was disappointing that she would fall for their deception so easily, a problem that D.C.Fontana had with the re-write of the episode), Edith Keeler, T'Pring, T'Pau... I always liked Uhura and thought she had a potential to be a wonderful character, but she rarely got anything to do, and was written inconsistently - there were far too many episodes where she would be given "girly" moments - screaming, saying "Captain, I'm frightened" etc.

Number One was so cool. She wasn't really THAT unemotional though - just unemotional compared to how other women were portrayed at that time. Vina and Number One are two of my favourite sci fi heroines actually. Even though the episode was 40 years ago, they coud hold their own as non-sexist characters today.

I agree. She certainly wasn't unemotional when on the bridge, being told she had to stay behind while Kirk, Spock etc beam down to the planet's surface. She sits there, head in hand, pouting because she can't go. I just don't get that reaction at all. She is supposed to be this cool unemotional character and she sits there and pouts like a schoolgirl! That little scene has always annoyed the crap out of me.

Mind you compare her reaction to someone like Trip Tucker and she's like an ice queen. It's all relative.

I gave up on Enterprise during the 2nd season, so i don't even remember Trip's reactions. I am going to give it another try somewhere down the line.

I don't know, Number 1's reaction just bothers the hell out of me. It's like, "we're going to put a woman in a power position to show how advanced we are as a race' but then they write her a reaction that doesnt fit AT ALL! GAH! Very frustrating for me.

But, i see your point as it all being relative.

"Season 4" would be the animated series. Are you referring to New Voyages/Phase II? 'Cause that would be better described as "Season 5".

Seems pretty clear to me that he's talking about Season 4 of Enterprise, since (a) he mentions Enterprise by name in the previous sentence and (b) he talks about it being a prequel in the following sentence. I mean, I may be wrong....

Yeah, I gave up on Enterprise around season 2, then came back to it during Season 4 and really started to get into it...and then it was cancelled!

It is one of the two episodes written by Jean Lisette Aroeste, a librarian who had never penned an hour of TV before, and of the two (the other being the, surprise, library-themed "All Our Yesterdays") this was the better one in my mind. A somewhat underrated hour of the show, IMHO.

Thanks for the imput. I've heard a lot of good things about the last season. Right now we are rewatching TOS on blu-ray, so when we are done with that i plan on buying ENT and giving it another try.
