Letter to Moonves

To the city of lost angels and Paramount pictures, I sent a letter to Les describing the way Star Trek could come back to television and won't stop until I get a response. If I get a negative reaction, I will post the idea here. It's only a half page long but it is a high mind concept adapted and merged into the pre Star Trek universe origins. I suspect Les is under orders not to appreciate anything creative by his staff of lawyers but if not him, then whom? The fans are Star Trek. Gene is Star Trek. It doesn't have the traditional Nx or NCC ship but it takes place before everything.

..and so what is this great idea. Because unless its something really different, and not just another hum-drum Trek show, i think CBS will leave it alone.

I am of the opinion that any star trek tv show, for the next 4 years or so, would be a very risky idea, and could damage the movies series as i maintain the later movies, with their quality being less than the TV shows running at the time, being the chief reason no one except us Star Trek dorks even went to see them.

So, your idea better impress me, since I am God.

So..what is your idea??

xortex, show Moonves a science fiction show on network tv that gets good enough ratings to air on CBS. If you can prove science fiction is commercially viable on network tv Moonves will try to make money, until you do he has no interest regardless of your concept.

LOST is probably the most successful SCIFI show in the 2000s (unless you count Hannity). So it can be done...

How many people would watch Starship Exeter if it was on CBS right now?

Not too many. And since, last time I checked, it takes place in the old TOS universe, Paramount isn't going to touch anything associated with that universe ever again. Which, IMO, is a GOOD thing.

If it's on CBS, it's gotta be good. It'll have brian fuller. Star Trek has been basically boiled down to rocket science these days. So it can be done. Roddenberry said it would be and it is in no way in competion with the movies except in quality and would be an origins story before Archer and Kirk and Spock - the first ship to leave the confines of our galaxy. Before the klingons and the Romulans.

This is not a bad idea. In fact, I like it, IF it takes place in the new JJ universe. Enterprise got off track, IMO, when the crew became 'just another' Trek crew in space; they had no 'awe' of being out there for the first time.

My own fanfic actually has TREK taking place just as we go to Mars, and all the politics behind the scenes. I think you have a good idea.

...umm..but I liked the last movie. The movie did exactly what it was meant to do; attract more fans and make money. Your idea is way too lofty for 'average' people to grasp. I am totally opposed to any new series that is 'different' from the JJ universe. And I think Paramount will adhere to that too; meaning no new trek in the old universe, or any other universe.

Rob, you said you liked the idea. My universe, star Trek that it may be is totally different than J.J's totally. This is my way of bringing Star Trek back to t.v. without upsetting anything. else I might as well call it Xortex and sell it as the Wendy's of outer space else Star Trek and Star Wars might collude to sell us crap. mmn.

it would be an extremely hard sell to get me interested in a series based on the new universe.

i'll take another TOS universe hands down.

a third universe must be created to come back to t.v..

No, not going to happen. Here is what CBS will tell you;

Look, we just spent all this money to make a new TREK movie. Your series must take place in that new universe so as to not cause any confusion with regular people out there who don't watch Star Trek, and who WE need to attract. Re-work it and have it take place in the JJ universe; or take your idea to SCIFI and get a 100th of the budget.

It's an attempt to bring the TOS universe back. That's not new.

An attempt to bring back TOS's universe? I think they just spent $160 million bucks destroying what, IMO, was the main issue with bringing new fans in; bloated and confusing continuity.

It would be like doing a movie trying to bring back the Burton era Batman movies? WHY?

No...CBS/PARAMOUNT for all kinds of reasons are never going back to that other old universe. They are about making young, hip movies for a broader audience. And old farts like us, I've been watching since TOS-season three, either have to conform or get out of the way; which is fine, since I thought XI was the best TREK movie in a long long time. (And the critics and $$$ it earned seem to agree with that assessment as well.)

Rob

no need to worry, once their XI sequal is ready they'll throw all kinds of money into advertising, and tell all the mindless mobs what they are supposed to like next, which happens to be their new movie...

thats my whole problem with this, what you call bloated and confusing, i call the backbone of a good story. its irrelevant in pieces, and more often than not invisible. trying to take it all in at once is the only time it gets "confusing and bloated"

IMO cannon a good start, and a great example to build off of. i also think it will make a comeback, just not anytime soon
