David Mack on his Vanguard, Typhon Pact, and nuTrek books...

There's a new interview over at Unreality-SF.net, with the brilliant David Mack.

The main focus is Star Trek Vanguard - there's discussion of the recently-released Precipice, and talk about the series' future - but the conversation also takes in the forthcoming Typhon Pact: Zero Sum Game and Mirror Universe: The Sorrows of Empire.

David also talks about More Beautiful Than Death, his 2010 followup to this year's Star Trek movie...

The Enterprise crew is ordered to escort Ambassador Sarek to a dilithium-rich planet called Akiron, which has sent out a planetary distress signal. When the Enterprise crew reaches Akiron, they find that the planet is under siege by dark-energy creatures that some of the planet’s more religious denizens believe are demons. In short order, one calamity after another puts our heroes in jeopardy. Sarek begins trying to pull diplomatic rank so he can pull the plug on the mission, and young Captain Kirk must fend off this unexpected challenge to his still-fragile command authority.

As Kirk sinks himself, his crew, and his ship deeper into danger with each passing minute, he finds his own beliefs in a rational universe challenged by a mystic who insists it’s no coincidence that has brought Kirk to Akiron but rather the alien equivalent of a Karmic debt. Meanwhile, one of Sarek’s young Vulcan aides has a sinister agenda - and its chief objective appears to be the cold-blooded murder of Spock.

Very cool indeed :techman:. The little hint about the Aventine Typhon Pact installment not actually focusing on the Aventine crew as the main characters was interesting. Now I find myself asking: WHO IS THE STAR OF ZERO SUM GAME?!? I MUST KNOW!!

Cool interview, thanks for the link! My Christmas treat for myself is catching up with Vanguard, so I'm really looking forward buying Precipice, and as for next summer's TrekXI books... can't wait! And the description of David Mack's installment is just making me even more excited :)

One of the spies presumably (or maybe a civilian Breen who likes to burst into song every now and again).

Hey--what are the odds that...

At least one of the spies is from...SECTION 31!!!

Hey, Mr. Mack--I find it most fascinating that Ezri's book is on the Breen--considering her experience with them in the final DS9 episode arc.

I wonder...

Could it be that Ezri's nighmare in "Till Death Do Us Part" was, in fact, a vision of the future--as depicted in this book? Could it be that one of the spies is JULIAN--in disguise as a Breen?!?:eek::eek:

NAHHHHHHHHHHHH....;)

Nice, lots of very interesting information. I can't wait to get to learn more about the Breen, I've been intrigued by them ever since the end of DS9. More Beautiful Than Death sounds cool too. I also really, really need to get reading Precipice.

I gotta say, I sincerely hope Jaime Costas picks up Vanguard and Mack's mirror universe conclusion.

I'm making an attempt to spread the word; I just bought the whole Vanguard series for a friend who's maybe seen 3 episodes of the original series, and he's loving it so far...

I just finished "Precipice." That was one of my favorites! Was great to see Quin and Pennington back in the limelight. I spent some time later looking at the Trek book schedule--am I really to be led to believe there isn't another Vanguard planned for next year? Waiting until '11 for the next novel would really be disappointing.
Oh, and I'm looking forward to seeing Mack's mirror universe book, too. I was kinda hoping the book would go beyond the short story, like a sequel. But an expansion on the short will be fun, too.

Dear Lord, me too. As much as I do enjoy the "on-screen" Trek characters, I have grown extremely attached to Vanguard, as well as things like the Mirror Universe books which provide a broader view of the Star Trek universe, and it would be a shame to see those things taken away.

I just want to chime in and say that I would also like to see the end of Spock's plan.

Very cool. Thanks for the link.

Thanks for that link.
Cool interview, thanks for the link!

Glad you liked the interview. Defcon and David both put a lot of time into it. :)

May I just say that it's silly how much I love Vanguard.:bolian:
I've still not read beyond the first book. Despite having had a copy of the second one for over two years...

That was a great interview. I am really looking forward to Mack's expanded The Sorrow's of Empire and I do hope that we get to see Spock's plan come to fruition. I haven't really read the Vanguard series, I do want to and have been wanting to get all the books lately so I can get up to date with it. That's my next thing on my book list to get. I have enjoyed the last decade of Star Trek books and I hope they continue being just as good under the new editor as they have been with Marco and Margaret.

Me too. I love this one line Spock had - "The end of my empire will mean the end of all of yours." I can't wait till that happens. The Terran Republic (not Empire) will rise again, but the K-C Alliance hopefully will die, because it was even worse than the Empire.
