I didn't have any problems with Rising Son; I really enjoyed it. I'm also really enjoying Unity and looking forward to Losing the Peace.
After not buying any new Trek books for about 6 months, last Monday I finally got the 5 I'd been holding out for.
So far I've finished
- The Never Ending Sacrifice by Una McCormack, which was fantastic! I read the preview excerpt months ago, and it certainly lived up to my high expectations - the only disappointment was reaching the end and realising I couldn't keep reading!
- The Soul Key by Olivia Woods, which was simply AMAZING! I won't reveal any spoilers, but needless to say, it finally tied up the loose ends (which I'd been waiting years for) - and yet ended on SUCH an unexpected cliffhanger! I immediately wanted the next one, too bad there ISN'T a next one yet!
And right now I'm (finally) reading Full Circle by Kirsten Beyer, I'm somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 through - and although its been a while since I've visited Voyager, it hasn't bored me or disappointed me at all.
After I've finished it, I can move straight onto Unworthy!
Then its just Synthesis to go, and I'll again be waiting (impatiently) for more new books to read!

I stayed up late last night finishing Stephen King's On Writing: A Memoir of The Craft. The first half, the actual memoir part, may have been a little more interesting to read as a story, but the second half has some good advice and I found a lot of it rather mirrored my own experiences and methods of writing.
The next book I'm picking up is going to be On Basilisk Station by David Weber. I've heard a lot about the Honor Harrington series, including that it may not be the best, but I'll get to see for myself how much fun it is or isn't.
On a side note, I also feel like I "graduated" to something (to what I don't know) by finishing the first draft of my first novel! Now to let it ferment in the drawer until sometime in January.

Currently working on "Law of Nines" by Terry Goodkind. A continuation of the Sword of Truth series, by way of a far-future (well, don't know how far yet, but Richard & company have become old legends) story. It assumes that OUR Earth is where the people were banished to at the end of the last book, and now people are coming through into our world...for something... haven't gotten that part yet.
This may be the only time I set aside a book because it's good (or at least interesting); that book is Vector Prime...

Saw some books at the bookstore that looked kind of like the Hard Case Crime books (a great series of new and old noir and hardboiled crime fiction). Turned out they were part of Harlequin's 60th anniversary celebration, reprints of early novels from before Harlequin focused exclusively on romance. So I'm reading Virgin With Butterflies by Tom Powers, which so far is about 50/50 mystery and screwball comedy, which by me is a good thing.
Those old covers are great, but, just so you know, I hear Harlequin has edited those reprints to eliminate any old-fashioned sexism, racism, etc.
Joel_Kirk - the New Jedi Order is awesome. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise!

*What did you think of the Legacy of the Force series? (I heard it wasn't that great according to that other thread I started, so I'm avoiding it; that's probably the series you're referring to...
).*What do you think of the Fate of the Jedi series? (I think that is the latest series of books...).
I'm also interested in books that don't focus on Han, Luke, and Leia...and are set during the New Republic era. Moreover, the books that are standalone.
I'm reading the 'Tales of...' series, and plan on reading the X-Wing series...(even though some of those take place before the New Republic).
I don't think there are that many, though.

You want to read (in vague order of importance):
1) Zahn's books, in this order: Thrawn Trilogy, Hand of Thrawn, Outbound Flight, Survivor's Quest. Skip Allegiance.
2) The X-Wing series, and I, Jedi, which is basically part of the X-Wing series.
3) The NJO in its entirety, though there are a couple random supplemental e-books that you should skip. Just the full-length books.
4) The Republic Commando series, by Karen Traviss.
5) Anything by Matthew Stover, including the Episode 3 novelization.
And then stop.
Legacy of the Force is deeply stupid, and I haven't heard anything about Fate Of The Jedi that makes me think differently. And the vast majority of the rest of the standalones are useless; you're barking up the wrong tree there.
Interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if some of that happened in the book I'm reading, which features a ditzy Chicago cigarette girl getting mixed up with an Indian prince, visiting various places around the world. I'm not sure I mind that kind of editing, but it'd be nice to have an idea if it was changed, and how bad the sexism/racism was.
Yeah, it upset me when I found indication that the versions of the sequels to Three Musketeers that I was reading (from Penguin books, I think; I had a different version of the first book), was from any early (maybe Victorian era?) translation that had some risque elements removed. I immediately began to wonder whether I was missing things relevant to the plot. Truth be told, I don't even like content to be removed when it's stuff that I object to. I would always just rather have the original. (Although, since I don't read French, I can never really get Dumas in its purely original form.)

I'm currently reading Not in Front of the Servants: A True Portrait of English Upstairs/Downstairs Life and just finished Claudia Gray's Hourglass so I can update her website before the novel is published by HarperTeen in March 2010. Also reading Gary Russell's Divided Loyalties (a Fifth Doctor adventure from BBC's Past Doctor Adventures from the 1990s). Next up: Seanan McGuire's A Local Habitation coming from DAW also in March, and Lady Gregory's Cuchulain of Muirthemne (research).
