Sights, sounds and scents of Christmas?

This morning we were listening to some Christmas music while we were sitting around talking a short time after breakfast. Then unexpectedly for about a moment I swore I could smell the scent of pine in the air. This was strange because we haven't anything with a pine scent in the house. And we haven't put up a Christmas tree yet and it will be artificial rather than real.

That aromatic illusion of pine immediately connects with Christmas for me whenever I catch the scent no matter what time of year.

Other things? The smell of my mothers sucre-a-la-creme candy, her peanut butter squares and her meat pies. The first snows of the season, particularly those that stay at least a few days. Certain Christmas songs as well, of course.

Anyone else?

For me, it's cold air and the scent of vanilla and cinnamon. Whenever mom starting baking pies or candied spiced walnuts, that means Christmas. We used to all pile into the family station wagon and go to a Christmas Tree farm, and then stop at an Apple Farm, that had pony rides and every apple goody you can think of. It was an all day affair, that ended with us riding home in the dark, with Christmas music playing on the radio.

So, I always associate Christmas music with good times and food; just hearing it makes me happy. Pine trees, cinnamon and vanilla always make me think of Christmas.

The smells of Christmas pudding/mince pies, pine trees & alcohol (esp. sherry and port) always mean Christmas to me.

I know artificial tress are more practical, more environment friendly and a lot less messy, but I miss going out for a tree and that scent of evergreen. I haven't experienced that since I was small.

In Canada--well many parts of it anyway--snow is synonymous with Christmas. now that I've moved away a decent distance from the Greater Toronto area I'm really hoping for a proper near Christmas card like white Christmas that will last from a bit before Christmas to a bit after New Years..

I love this season! I love New York at Christmastime. I love the golden lights that are strung across the streets and the giant wreaths at Astor place. I love walking through the rows of trees along the sidewalks; the smell is so divine. I even love seeing pedestrians with red Starbucks cups. People all bundled up. I also love cheesy Christmas music in all the shops.

Smells: gingerbread, fir tree, glühwein...

Sounds: The Pogues & Kirsty McCall: Fairytale of New York. That song always starts my Christmas.

I like seeing stores dressed up for Christmas...just not before December.

When I was a kid I loved going into downtown Toronto and seeing the window displays of the old Eaton's store as well as The Bay and Simpsons. I liked seeing the Old City Hall outlined in Christmas lights at night. Now I like how some small towns dress up their main streets for Christmas.

I recall a Christmas Eve many years ago when I took the train from Toronto to small town Havelock, Ontario to be home for Christmas. When I arrived it was about 10:00 at night and there was snow everywhere. My parents were waiting on the open platform and it was like a scene from an old movie.

I also recall many Christmas Eves in the early '70s when the radio was an integral part of Christmas. My sisters and I stayed up to listen country music station CFGM's Christmas selections, but mostly to follow their Norad reports tracking an "unidentified" object flying down from the North Pole. They always eventually identified the unknown object as Santa's sleigh and they estimated his arrival time in the Toronto area as around midnight. Man, I really miss that sort of thing.

I also miss that stores didn't start getting into Christmas mode before Halloween. I miss how many radio stations handled Christmas music: the occasional song beginning in the first couple weeks of December then played with gradually increasing frequency as the month progressed. Only on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day did you get nonstop Christmas music. You didn't have one extreme or the other. And sometimes you could still hear the occasional Christmas tune until New Years, which I still think is nice because then it feels more like a special time of year rather than just a one day event.

What I really miss (and now resent since) is stores not being open on Dec. 26th, also known as Boxing Day here in Canada (and in the UK as well I believe). Big sales started on the 27th. Stores still made piles of money and people still bought piles of stuff, but at least you had that extra day to travel and enjoy a special time of year, particularly those who worked in retail. Now the 26th has been sold out to the corporate interests and retail related folks are forced to work that day, many of them very early on the 26th so that Christmas Day for them has to be spent near to home and with the thought of very early to bed. I hate and resent it with a passion. And if the Wal-marts of the world had their way I guarantee they'd be open on Christmas Day as well if they can find a way to swing it. Bastards. As it is I refuse to shop on the 26th, and because I work in retail I also always try to get the afternoon shift on that day.

There's something about the John Denver and the Muppets Christmas Together album from 1979 that just sets the tone for me.

^I LOVE that album! Though Charlie Brown Christmas is my all-time favorite Christmas music. Actually one of my all-time favorite albums.

Apple cinnamon is the Christmas scent for me. Warm, spicy, and sweet. I can't smell it without feeling a shiver of holiday anticipation.

As far as sights, silly as this may be, I always feel excited when I see the Little Debbie Christmas cakes in the stores. I especially like the Christmas Tree cakes and the little Christmas Wreath cookies. I love buying that first box of the season. It's official, then!

Of course, driving around on a cold night (and those are rare here, unfortunately) and looking at people's Christmas lights really puts me in the festive mood.

I think we listened to that record so much growing up that the needle wore the record right out.

I have it on CD now, and I've tormented my four-year-old with it. Alas, she doesn't understand. :(

Yep, I agree. I've done that numerous times in the past. It's been awhile since I've done it though.

^ Surprisingly enough, I really enjoy that. Just to drive around, looking at lights, and listening to Christmas music, is a WONDERFUL way to spend a December evening---well, for me, anyway.

^^ If there's some snow on the ground and on the roofs to reflect the Christmas lights then it's even better.
