The Office: 6x12 - "Scott's Tots" - Discussion

Samurai8472

A decade-old promise to pay college tuition for a bunch of children comes back to haunt Michael. With rumors of Dunder Mifflin going under dragging down the staff, Jim hopes an Employee of the Month award will raise spirits.

I thought a Thanksgiving episode would have been great last week.

That was actually kind of uncomfortable to watch; both the A and the B story. It was more mean-spirited than funny, except for Dwight having typed up "My Diabolical Plan" and Stanley laughing hysterically at Michael's predicament. The Michael and Erin scene toward the end was nice, though.

My GF and I were arguing about this. I say Erin is in love with Michael, she says she just looks up to him. Opinions? In either case he's an ass for not noticing her and appreciating her.

I got more of a master/padawan sort of vibe from the end conversation, but I could see how that could be interpreted as something more, especially with Michael not having any limits of what is an appropriate relationship or not.

Yeah, it was kind of bugging me the way he was treating her like crap throughout the episode (obviously to set-up the reversal), even though I know it's just because he's bummed about the bankruptcy and is missing Pam's help.

Has Dwight been increasing his efforts to get Jim fired? Or is this just something that Dwight does every now and then?

No, this was by far his most elaborate and dare I say diabolical plan yet. He's been pissed about Jim getting a job he believes is rightfully his, but he's never taken his efforts to get rid of Jim to this extent before (usually just keeping things in-house instead of going to corporate).

This was probably the first time I really, truly hated Dwight...the writers are moving him beyond annoyance to colossal a-hole, especially since it seems that Ryan is getting in on it as well...

Why didn't Jim just tell the office that Dwight was the one who created the "anonymous" spreadsheet of employee rankings?

I think she's just dumb. Someone on the writing staff has said there will be more to come with Andy/Erin.

That's a good question. He could have also said that he didn't authorize any money collection. Also, if he wanted to, he could have traced how the cake was paid for. However, I've noticed that Jim tends to get flustered when things go haywire and his usual quick-thinking is become impaired.

I really wanted to see Dwight get his comeuppance and was disappointed that the story ended with a deus ex machina.

Also, I am very, very confused at why Ryan hates Jim so much. What did Jim ever do to Ryan. I know about the whole sticking him in a closet thing, but Ryan has had it in for Jim since Season 4. Why? I don't get it. Is it because Pam turned him down once?

Wasn't Jim the one who reported that Ryan was cooking the sales numbers for the Dunder-Mifflinfinity website while he was at corporate (that - along with the drugs - ultimately got Ryan fired)? I don't think Ryan knows that though. Of course, Ryan was already sort of threatening to get Jim fired at that point, so that wasn't the start of the feud.

Plus, Ryan put Jim on his hit list for who to take out when he was back on top later on. Jim sticking Ryan in the closet last week because he was goofing off and challenging Jim's authority certainly pissed Ryan off.

Pam could be a small part of it, and was the original source of rivalry between them, but I think now it's just more that Ryan's a super-ambitious douche and thinks Jim is standing in the way of him going further.

Didn't Jim rat out Ryan about the posting of double reporting the website sales when Ryan was fired?

With Erin it might be that Erin wants to be respected by her colleagues. If Pam's interaction with her over the itinerary was an indication (rather than Pam just being moody) of how the office treats her it isn't all that great. With Michael she would definitely feel in receptionist Pam's shadow and just wants Michael to treat her with a higher level of respect.

Jim undermined Ryan back when Ryan worked for corporate. Jim told David Wallace he disagreed with Ryans strategy for the company, and that information got back to Ryan somehow. Ryan told Jim about it on one episode, then said "watch your back, Halpert." At the time Ryan claimed he was just joking, but the vendetta has been going on since then.

They've been building this story over the past couple of episodes, including the listening device in that pen. Dwight originally had it inside of a duck.

^ Actually the pen listening device was the original plan. He handed the pen to Jim under the guise that it was Jim's pen he left on Dwight's desk. Then comes the duck, which was the distraction that he expected Jim to find and deal with, hence making him feel safe.

Considering the company is in trouble and Jim has a new bride, a baby on the way and a mortgage, fuck Dwight for his bullshit.

I also didn't like the idea of Michael promising inner city kids tuition, and how people seemed to play it off as a joke that he wasn't going to go through with it. Michael as dumb as he is, probably sincerely believed he would help those kids, and promised to do so because he really wanted to help them. You have to beleive it was absolutely crushing for those kids and Michael that he couldn't pay up. I dunno, if you're going to have an A and B story about crushing lives there should be a better payoff than two awkward conversations at the end. As boring as the last episode was, at least it wasn't as mean spirited as this one was. I just hope there's some payoff for this.
