"Weapons off-line" and other dumb mistakes

^ You've been waiting for an opportunity to use that, haven't you?

Does anybody else think it's too much when people are nitpicking such minor stuff?
No, not even when they're picking the same nit for the fourth or fifth time. Trek fans pick nits; they're allowed to do that. Just let it pass.

Oh, I got another for ya.

The make out of the Kelvin is simple. The bottom tube is the warp engine, the saucer section houses the bridge, and the upper tube has the deflector dish and the shuttle bay. √

When Captain Robau goes to the shuttle bay (above the saucer section where the bridge is located), it shows the turbolift inside the shuttle bay going DOWN from what looks like the high ceiling, he walks out, and goes UP a flight of stairs to get into the shuttle! I don't go to the 15 floor only to get there, go up to the 20th, then go down to the 14th and take the stairs up to the fifteenth. Continuity please?

I didn't think this was worth mentioning because it's been brought up so many times on these boards, but yeah, it's listed as a nit on imdb.com.

Next?

Nitpicking is half the fun!

One thing that did niggle me was Spock’s 3-second journey in the turbolift, in which the lift doesn’t seem to change direction. In the physical space of the enterprise, his lift would have to go up forward, up, forward and up again, then turn 180 degrees (the bridge was facing the opposite direction to the ‘front’ of engineering. To make this journey without feeling the effects of sudden acceleration, plus the jolts as the lift changes course, must be a staggering feat of technology!

Well it would be the same technology that allows them to accelerate at impulse engine speeds without anyone getting flattened or having to rebalance themselves as the ship turns, but yes, it is a staggering feat of technology nonetheless :p

...OTOH, it's excellent continuity. That's what turbolifts always do.

Another bit of good continuity: turbolifts virtually never take you all the way to your destination, unless it's the bridge. You always have to walk along a corridor (where you can chat with your shipmates about interesting plot developments), or run (to give that great sense of urgency and action you don't get by riding in a 'lift and just biting your fingernails), or climb some ladders (to indicate that yes, it is a big ship).

Here's one of my faves.

Kirk: I don't believe in the no-win scenario.
LATER
Kirk: We gotta stop the ship! We gotta stop the ship! We're going into a trap!
LATER
Kirk: We should hunt Nero down! Either we're going down or they are!

People nitpick previous Star Trek movies and shows all the time; what makes the new movie so special? :vulcan:

And its "too much" and massively annoying when its been done in the past as well.

Here's one of my faves.

And your point? Does his belief that there is always a way to win preclude avoiding traps or hunting down an enemy? Both are ways to win in the given situation.

You would rather have them fly head first into a trap and die then doom the Federation?

That sounds like Klingon talk to me :shifty:

Let's not forget how Shatner Kirk surrendered the Enterprise in VI. It was either that or start intergalactic war right then and there. If that ain't a no-win... :)

They did, only they didn't die.

See? He won the no-win. TA-DAAAA!! :)

I've got one but this is maybe just a personal nit and not really a nit of the film: Majel Barret is the voice of the Enterprise computer, but I'm pretty sure that the voice in Kirk's escape pod is not her. At least in the spinoffs, almost any Starfleet computer had her voice, regardless of whether or not it was on the ship.

(Of course, if backstage reasons for the change in VAs include health concerns or timing, that's totally understandable)
