Doctor Who hits Croatia [Very mild Spoilers]

Cast and crew have now headed out for two weeks in Croatia, which will stand in for 19th century Paris for Richard Curtis' VanGogh episode and 16th century Venice for another episode. (A second-unit crew was shooting establishing shots in the real Venice earlier in the month.)

Some photos of the location being dressed for the second episode here:

Very cool. When you say 'second episode' do you mean this is a two-parter, or the second episode to air in the new season?

Second as in they're shooting two completely seperate episodes. (Guess it's the way to make it financially viable.)

19th century Paris...
16th century Venice...
Is it too much to hope for a pure historical from Moffat before too long?

Well, we know from Curtis that his episode has VanGogh fighting an alien and the Venice one is supposedly called "Vampire(s) Of Venice" so I wouldn't hold my breath.

God damn it. Vampires?

Why do folks get an opportunity to write a Doctor Who and then decide: Fuck it, Vampires are popular right now. Let's throw something together with them.

I'm not expecting one this coming season, but perhaps someday soon. It's the genre that RTD never touched. Maybe Moffat will give it a go.

You know what would be awesome? David McIntee's Sanctuary adapted for Matt Smith. :)

Ah, but in Doctor Who, vampires have a particular history, finding their origin in the Old Time, Gallifrey's ancient past and the war with the Great Vampire...cf. State of Decay...

I'd be surprised if he went in that direction. Moffat has previously said something along the lines of, "Doctor Who without monsters is like a whodunit without a mystery. What's the point?" Though, I guess anything is possible.

Then come back when you've got something better!

And Richard Curtis is very familiar with this? If so, cool.

Now, if he's just watched Twilight a bunch of times...fuck.

Monsters don't have to be alien. The monsters in Children of Earth weren't the Four-Five-Six, for instance. My suggestion of Sanctuary was deliberate; the Albigensian Crusade and the Catholic Church's slaughter of thousands of dissenters was an atrocity -- and exactly the kind of monster that the Doctor would fight.

I agree this would be awesome.

Croatia will make a handsome stand in for Venice. Looking forward to seeing it guest star in the forthcoming episodes. :)

Neither- Richard Curtis isn't writing the Venice episode, whether it has vampires or not!

This is two completely separate episodes by different writers filmed on the same location to make the most out of the budget.

I'm tempted to say it could never be done on a BBC budget, but considering some of the things they *have* managed in nu Who...

Still, it'd need the right sort of established companion beforehand, for all manner of reasons...

Wow, impressive stuff. And I thought the budget had been cut this year.

And on a sidenote, are they really never going to let Karen Gillan wear anything but mini-skirts, even in Winter?

(Hold off the predictable "Phwor, I hope not," responses please!)

EDIT: Just saw someone on GB point out that Amy's boyfriend Rory is also in the photos so it looks like we'll be having two companions in at least some of the next series.
