Mental overload of an MMO gamer

Zonned

Ensign
Newbie
I have a bad habbit of trying to become an expert on the lore of every MMO before I start it... a habbit which this time has somewhat overwhelmed me as the next MMO I plan to start is Star Trek Online.

I find my head swirling trying to absorb it all at once, while I never considered myself a Trekkie I am an anime fan and have thus grown accustomed to marathoning long series... but I have to say there is so much content that even I am struggling to watch and absorb it all lol

The past 2 months I have watched

All of Star Trek Enterprise

All of Star Trek Voyager

6 seasons of Star Trek The Next Generation (working on 7)

2 Seasons of Deep Space 9 (pending more)

A few episodes of TOS (pending finishing Next Generation) but I watched most of it on tv as a kid anyway... planning a rewatch now that im older.

Movies... except for Generations is pending.

40 years of tv series and movies in 3-4 months? Can I do it I think so... I don't even know why im writing this...

Opinions?

I think you're out of your mind. But hey, if this is how you got into Trek, who am I to judge?

It does seem like you are setting yourself up for confusion, though, watching all the series out of order! A better order would have been:

TOS
TNG
DS9
VOY
ENT

Maybe you would have watched ENT after TOS and before TNG, for chronological purposes, but it works either way.

I'm not sure all that is really necessary in order to appreciate Star Trek Online, though. The vast, vast majority of filmed Trek has little relevance outside the episode in which it occurred. That's the nature of episodic television. :) But I hope you are enjoying yourself nontheless!

I watched TOS as a kid which is why I was saving it for last and I had watched some TNG episodes here and there on tv which is why I chose the order that I did. But I also have a pretty good understanding of the timeline so watching them slightly out of order hasn't caused that much damage.

Wow Zonned... all this in order to play a video game? Wouldn't be my first choice, but good luck!

Yeah, that's why I never really got into any MMOs. The level of commitment and attention just makes it feel like work to me, and I do enough of that already.

Well if I think im going to make a commitment to a new MMO I study up on the lore behind it. Going in to any MMO ignorant of its background and lore puts you at a disadvantage. :)

That's intense. I played WoW for awhile and never got into any of the lore. But hey, glad you're into Trek now!

some advice going into a new MMO... wait. it's tough (i may not even do it) but if STO anything like the Champions launch, expect lots of imbalance in classes, followed by crazy changes that just swing balance another way, powers that don't work, incomplete features, and a severe lack of an endgame...

i'm struggling with picking up the game at launch. i know the issues above, i expect gameplay that is "good" at it's best (the space combat) and "mediocre" for the rest. BUT if i don't play at launch, i doubt i'll see that many people playing a year later... so buggy/rough, but populated/more social experience? or relatively smooth but devoid of many players experience?

i'm still deciding.

as for lore... doesn't matter to me if the gameplay isn't fun. if you watch all of trek and learn all of the lore, then it turns out you don't care for the game, and didnt care for the shows... that's a lot of time you can't get back. is it worth it for such an unknown?

I wouldn't call an MMO "just a game" many people get involved playing them for years.

I played Everquest for 3 years and Planetside for a year or so. When I look back on the amount of time I wasted on them I can honestly say, they are 'just games'

I bought the pre-launch pack for Champions which got me into the open beta. Played the Beta for almost 2 weeks, decided the game was too much like City of Heroes and going to be another grind fest. Walked away from the whole affair only $5 out of pocket.

Plan to do the same thing with STO.

I could be evil and also mention that some of the books also play into the lore of ST:O.

But I won't...

Yes I read the game did take a little from the novels and comic books...

After I finish the live action series and movies i'll see what other information I can assimilate. :borg:

There will be a novel that takes place in the game universe, The Needs of the Many. It's set to be published at the end of March.

Well, the big question - which no one has asked, yet - is: Did you like it?

Watching all of Trek is certainly a daunting task. I have a similar goal, I'm watching all of the old Doctor Who series in chronological order. But I'm deliberately taking my time with it because I think it would be a shame to rush through 26 seasons and then having nothing more to watch. At least, unlike Trek, the new series is still in production but it only produces 13 episodes and a Christmas special each year at the most.
