How Many Books Do You Have?

Estimate, if need be. I'm guessing a lot of people here have extensive collections. I've been cleaning out my office at home (the smallest of our three bedrooms) and was astonished to find that I have over two hundred books in this room! I knew I had a decent number in here but didn't think it would be quite that high considering I've left a number of my books at my parents' house.

I guess more than that, how do you store them? Right now I love my set-up. I've got a nice wall-mounted shelf above my desk, a standalone bookcase, and there are shelves in the sides of my desk for stashing small objects or paperbacks.

When I lived in an apartment I had them lining my windowsills because I ran out of places to keep them.

So what about the rest of you? Extensive collections? Star Trek paperbacks? Exquisite signed editions of something or the other? Books in random corners of the house or arranged neatly on shelves?

Oh, lord. I have no idea. I have boxes upon boxes of books because the few bookshelves I do have are completely full. Someday, when I have my own house, I will have a library. I can only hope it's big enough.

I would have about 400. I used to have at least 1000 but I got rid of many of them when I moved.

The majority of my books have been stuffed away in my parents' attic (they decided to put them away when I moved away to college). For a really long time I barely read anything other than Trek books, but I branched out once I left home. I have about 50 books in my apartment right now (it doesn't seem like that many until I actually think about it!)...and probably 100 or so stored at my parents' house.

With those ladders that slide along the bookcases? Because that would be awesome and I would invite myself over and never leave.

I did a quick count which I believe is more or less correct and came up with 537 in multiple genres. The highest concentrations seems to be science fiction, fantasy and history.

I'm fairly new at buying books, the library is my friend, but I hope to have my own library some day too.

I think I have about 300 or 400 hundred, with probably 50-60 of them unread. I need to clear out my VHS tapes to have more room for them I think.

Exactly my plan. There will also be a comfy chair and a cozy little stove. (And a tea cozy. I don't know what a tea cozy is, but I want one!) There will be so many books that one doesn't know whether there even is a wall behind them or if the house is being held up by books.

Although with a little under 200 books, I am not quite there yet. But Christmas is coming up so I'm working on it. They are currently in two shelfs on two different walls.

My favorite is definitely an old George Eliot book I have. Inside is a little note that says 'To Mary. Christmas 1892.'

Tens of thousands, which includes hardcovers, paperbacks, magazines and comics. They come in both fiction and non-fiction, and subjects include... well, a lot. :rommie: My shelves are all full, a lot of stuff is packed away in boxes and the rest is just piled up. I'm another one who needs a house to fit all my stuff, and I will hopefully have one within the next couple of years. And those sliding ladders sound like a good idea.

I've never really counted how many books I have, Not that many are fiction, but a lot of them are medical textbooks, some second-hand, plus I have tons of journals and magazines covering many subjects.

300 being shipped to the US to be library-ised once I'm set up out there with my fiancée.

Another 200 staying at home for my parents to keep or read, and 80 of my deceased grandfather's to get rid of since they're not really of any use to me. I read them and now they're going.

And 2,500 in various eBook formats, all genres but mostly science fiction/fantasy.

However, once I am in the US and know exactly what the state of my finances is, I will be reconstituting a couple of old collections that I had to get rid of a few years ago when I moved back home from university. That will add another 1-200 books.

That is one of my life dreams - I always thought when going round old country homes here that I really wouldn't want to upkeep or live in the rest of the thing, but I would adore a library like theirs.
I guess it's the nerd equivalent of putting in a gym

I keep thinking about shelving out my back bedroom so I have enough space for my books, as it is now they're stacked higgledy-piggledy on the one bookcase I have that isn't used for DVDs, and a shelf in my bedroom for the ones I have yet to read.
