What happened immediately after the conclusion of Cause and Effect?

Xerxes1979

Captain
Captain
The Bozeman had no current orders, was three weeks distant from its orginal starbase and probably was somewhat distant from the chain of command using its own 23rd century subspace radio.

Do you think the Bozeman tagged along with the Enterprise-D on whatever mission they were up to before the time loop?

Do you imagine several days of elaborate intership dinners aboard the flagship ensued as a way of beginning the acclimation process? Certainly the availiblity of the replicator would have ensured a much higher quality of food.

Re: What happened immediately after the conclusion of Cause and Effect

It depends on how history remembers the ship. But I don't think the Bozeman was particularly famous or anything since they didn't seem to recognize the ship when it was identified in the end. Some of the crew members may have served with famous figures... like Kirk so some historians, etc might want to meet them. Some aging Vulcans might want to call up an old friend who was on the Bozeman....

Re: What happened immediately after the conclusion of Cause and Effect

Yeah, I always had the feeling this momentous revelation occurs and the episode just cuts short.

Hell, in "Yesterday's Enterprise" the appearance of a ship from the past triggers a whole new eps. In this one, the appearance of a ship from the past triggers...end credits. ???

Re: What happened immediately after the conclusion of Cause and Effect

Picard did ask Captain Bateson to come aboard the Enterprise because they had to talk. I would imagine Picard told Bateson where and when he was, and that they were stuck in the future. Unlike in Yesterday's Enterprise the temporal abnormality seems to be one way. I would think that after a quick system's check of both ships, and a call to Starfleet command, the Enterprise escorted the Bozeman to the nearest starbase, or they rendezvoused with another ship that would escort the Bozeman to a starbase. The crew of the Bozeman would most likely be given the choice of continuing in Starfleet or retiring.

I wonder how many, if any, crewmen of the Bozeman are younger than their grandchildren?

Re: What happened immediately after the conclusion of Cause and Effect

I expect Troi and her staff would have been busy working with the crew of the Bozeman. I suppose one good thing for them as opposed to now, is that life expectancies being much higher in their time, there's a chance that many of their relatives would still be alive.

Re: What happened immediately after the conclusion of Cause and Effect

History recorded that the Bozeman vanished without trace back in the 23rd century, so for the last hundred years everyone would've assumed the ship was lost with all hands - therefore any attempt to send the Bozeman back (slingshot effect perhaps) would not be permitted.

As for what took place after the episode, I would imagine that the Bozeman followed the Enterprise to an appropriate Starfleet outpost. Picard would contact Starfleet Command en route and the process of sending appropriate staff out to the starbase - counselors to speak to the crew for example - would begin. After all, these misplaced people have to come to terms with the fact that their families are long dead and the galaxy they knew has gone.

They'd probably be given the option to leave Starfleet to pursue whatever life they now feel they want, or permitted to retrain and continue their service in the fleet.

I suppose the Bozeman could be refitted to bring it up to the standards of the 2360s, or at least somewhere close to that. Or simply handed over to be a museum exhibit.

Why is your post in italics?

Re: What happened immediately after the conclusion of Cause and Effect

Given that a ship called the Bozeman was in service during the Borg invasion of 2373, whose CO (over subspace radio) sounded remarkable like Morgan Bateson ;) I think that at least some of the crew of the Bozeman stayed in Starfleet.

As to the ship itself, given how many Miranda-class vessels are still in service as of the Dominion War, it's certainly not beyond Starfleet's capability to keep the old girl up to date. They knew how to build 'em in those days.

The teaser.

Re: What happened immediately after the conclusion of Cause and Effect

Aw, I don't buy the "live with it" outcome. If it was Picard and the Enterprise suddenly thrown a century into the future, or Sisko and crew trapped 2000 years in the past, or Kirk and the Enterprise 50 years in the future... whatever...they'd never just give up and live with it. Why would the Bozeman and crew be any different?Don't you think they'd try to modify the inverse tachyon beam or slingshot around the sun or re-route chronoton particles through the deflector or whatever??If there was some technobabble way to get back to their own time, why wouldn't the Bozeman crew go for it?There didn't seem to be an historic galactic reason for the Bozeman to stay "disappeared and lost". So work like hell to get back home when they belong, don't you think?Unless, you know, the Bozeman crew though it would be cool to live out their lives in the future. And why is my formatting all screwed up here???

Re: What happened immediately after the conclusion of Cause and Effect

I just realized... the Miranda class doesn't have a deflector dish... Sorry, reading what was said about re-routing chronoton particles made me picture them trying that and... then I realized that there wasn't a deflector on the Miranda class...

The Bozeman crew is a trained group of people, they would understand the consequences of their travelling back in time and continuing to live their lives when history records that they died/vanished from their own time. And if they expressed any desire to try (which they wouldn't despite how they might feel) Starfleet would have no choice but to stop them lest they erase the 'current' timeline from existence.

Also, history records that they didn't travel back, so the Bozeman crew KNOW they never do.

The Enterprise C was lost, according to the records of the Alternate time line Federation. But they had to return. They were important in the history of the Federation.

In the big scheme of things, the Bozeman and her crew may not have been important to the time they came from. They might, however, be important to the new time they entered. As mentioned they did fight the Borg, and we don't know what role, if any, they played in the Dominion War. A predestination paradox, I believe they called it in Trials and Tribble-ations.

Q told Picard that in the new time line he created where Picard was never stabbed through the heart, that he (Picard) just wasn't that important(Tapestry). The crew of the Bozeman may also be equally unimportant. The Federation survived when the Bozeman disappeared, it continues to survive after the crew stayed in their future.

But I don't think that 'not that important' can be relevant, if Starfleet of 2368 records that the Bozeman didn't reappear in the past then they can not allow it to be sent back. Why would anyone do it?

If a missing warship from World War Two suddenly reappeared today, would we (making the obvious assumption that we could) send it back, when the history books recorded it vanished? Sending it back could/would alter history and possibly stop the timeline we live in from exisisting, wiping us all out in favour of a timeline where the warship didn't vanish. No one in their right mind would send it back.

Starfleet is no different, and the Bozeman crew could understand that.

Right, just like that WWII ship appearing in the here and now means that she was not important to the Allied victory; the Bozeman had no importance to it's time period. So I think we're both agreeing that there is no reason to send the Bozeman back. Her disappearance did not have a drastic effect on history.

Re: What happened immediately after the conclusion of Cause and Effect

For all we know, if the Bozeman went back, they would have been the closest ship to the energy ribbom in 2293. That means Kirk wouldn't have gotten "killed". So Picard wouldn't have been able to get help in the Nexus.

A quick check on the name and registry on the Bozemen would have confirmed her helping the the El Alorians.
