Did this movie make Star Trek "cool"?

Yeah, you also need to define cool. For me, cool doesn't mean 'something that lots of people like'.

Well "not geeky". Or nerdy or dorky if those words are still part of the lexicon. :borg:

Instead of distant, fringe, weird and aloof...rather to be affable, agreeable, current, sexy and hip. More like Kirk and Han Solo and less like Mr. Spock, Data, or Borg .

Now you can argue that guys like Spock and Data are cool because they can be so super strange and aloof from most people that they now seem cool, (b/c we know they do have a following) like the pothead kid in high school that has little or no friends and listens to every no name band out there,...but come on. That's not the cool we're talking about.

Please do not pull a Data on me and ask me to define cool without using other adjectives. ;)

What is "cool"? The original Star Trek gave us hope of a future during a cold war, a Vietnam War. Star Trek gives us a hope of the future today when we are so mired in wars. The movie is uplifting, exciting, familiar(to us from the 60's) and really, really COOL!!!!

I now know several teenagers who never saw Trek prior to this movie and are now watching varying series because the movie was so freaking cool.

And on the flipside, I am aware of no-one who has gone on to be a Trek fan outside of watching the film a few months ago and kinda liking it.

I don't even know anybody who has bought the DVD.

Historically, the word "cool" has been used to describe that which virginal nerds do not like; whether it be music or fashion, or some other element of the popular culture embraced by the socially adept. It has often been applied to that which is new or different, and brings about a needed change. It has referred to that which appeals primarily to the young. It has been characterized as assured, confident and self-possessed. Sometimes it just means nifty, neat or groovy. By these and many other definitions, this movie was indeed cool.

It's pretty cool at Amazon; I just returned from there.

Amazon's pricing makes me laugh. WalMart and Sam's Club have been selling the Blu-Ray for $19.96 and the single DVD for $9.96 all along. Amazon wishes us to believe we are getting a huge discount with their pricing. :guffaw:

You really should get out more. Star Trek 2009 has become part of the mainstream. Many places have sold out of their copies. No one laughs when someone says they like Star Trek now. I live in rural North Carolina with farmers and rednecks and even they have seen and liked the movie.
To paraphrase Huey Lewis, "It's hip to be Trek!"

If you're waiting for Star Trek to become cool, I'd advise against holding your breath because you'd become a VERY deep shade of purple!

It can.

To each their own. I thought this film was the perfect way to update the classic show, while being accessible to new people.

now at my school It's considered "Cool" to be a Star Trek Fan: something this nerd had never experienced!
In my day I learned Kirk-Fu to fight off the peeps that thought Trek was un-cool! Kudos to your new world!!

Sector7 was right.

This movie was "cool". Thats about it.
Absolutely.

My cousin bought the DVD from a hole-in-the-wall store a week early, and he would never have ever considered buying anything with the words "Star Trek" on it in his entire life. In fact, he also bought a Spock Prime action figure, another thing that almost gave me a heart attack when I found out.

Very cool indeed!
Get him a Playmates Enterprise from Target or somewhere to cement his Trekieness!:techman:

Heh, funny enough, he's not a big fan of Federation starship design. He says they look like "flying pancakes". I don't see it. ;) He says the same thing about the Millennium Falcon, too.

Still, he freely admits that the Enterprise is a badass spacecraft, even if he doesn't care too much for the layout.

For someone who isn't a big fan of Trek, he does have a vague understanding of the history of these characters, and he does have a certain affinity for Kirk, Spock, and the others. His favorite scenes in the movie are those that feature Spock Prime, particularly when he and Kirk speak for the last time. The whole scene really does it for him, and it's due to his passing familiarity with TOS films, and his awareness of the impact these characters have had on pop culture.

He also loves the action scenes, natch.:techman:
