Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and why?

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

The needs for the -80's era Goldsmith outweighs the benefits of the ILM, huh? (hell, I agree, especially once ILM started designing stuff instead of just executing shots.)

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

I'd rather have Jerry Goldsmith
Yeah, his score for TFF was spectacular. Rosenman's refit for IV (He only ever wrote one film score that he re-works slightly for every movie) was dull.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

And I do feel that although the effects in TFF were awful (though I think Sha-Ka-Ree looked cool), I can forgive it because they're not as important to things as the characterisations and ideas. Also, many of the sets were fantastic. The bridge was the best seen yet, the shuttlebay was great, the brig was great, the ship's museum-type-room was great. And for the budget, Paradise City was decent.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

the shuttlebay was great
Coolest scene in the film. The set was top knotch.
I REALLY wish Paramount had let Shatner "fix" it a couple years ago like he wanted to.:(

#1) STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982) - A classic that goes beyond Trekdom. Ricardo Montalbon gives what I truly believe to be one of the most deliciously villanious performace ever. William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and the rest of the cast give their best performaces in the entire series. As Kirk, Shatner manages to be his most charasmatic and heroic, while being his most human at the same time.

#2) STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (1996) - It makes me realize that TNG could have worked so much better on the big screen then it actually did. Patrick Stewart gives his best performance as Picard. The battle at the beginning still gets my blood racing, after seeing it for the 800th time. The "first contact" scene should give goosebumps to any true Trek fan.

#3) STAR TREK (2009) - I have a hard time even calling this a remake. It's far too respectful for that title. While it manages to give the franchise a new and exciting start, it still feels very much at home as Trek. I was among the first to say that recasting these roles would be impossible, but the casting could not have been more perfect. Pine, Quinto and Urban are absolutley perfect. It's big, bold and exciting. Traits Trek lacked for far too long.

Not a bad trio, there. Surely, the three most entertaining Trek movies, the three I'd show to a non-fan (my nieces, for example) to show them that trek can be helluva lot of fun. Much as the pretentious git (said with tongue fully planted in cheek) in me prefers TMP, I have no illusions as to the sheer excitement of good, fast paced space adventure. These movies have that quality, TMP does not.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

Star Trek - If you think about it, after 30 years of big-screen adventures, Star Trek becomes a HUGE movie. The scope is massive, the acting is fantastic, the writing is smart and witty, and the special effects are like nothing else. This is STAR TREK on the big screen as it should be!

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - Aside from it being such a fun movie, this one has major sentimental value for me as it was (I think) the first Star Trek movie that I saw. It's a great wrap up to the 'Spock Trilogy'. Incidentally, even though seven more movies followed, I always felt like this could serve as the last TOS film in some capacity. The ending seemed very appropriate.

Star Trek: First Contact - Recently, I've developed a major MAJOR liking of this movie. I always loved it and considered it one of my favorite movies in the series, but suddenly, I've grown to love it a lot more than The Wrath of Khan. I feel almost ashamed to say that I never noticed it, but I feel that the acting in this movie is done brilliantly. So many good actors in this cast.

ST:TMP - Great film as it bought Star Trek back to the screen and then TV.
Undiscovered Country and First Contact, just like the stories more than the others.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

My top 3:

1. The Undiscovered Country
(Deserves more credit than it is given many times.)

2. First Contact

3. Generations

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

The Search for Spock - I love the message of this movie so much - Friends sacrificing all for their fallen comrade. Stealing the Enterprise was thrilling, the death of Kirk's son heartbreaking, the destruction of the Enterprise poignant, and the end conversation between Kirk and Spock simply superb! My favorite line, "If I hadn't tried, the cost would have been my soul."

Star Trek 09 - a wonderful movie and a great story. I believe the writers NAILED the relationship between Kirk and Spock, and wraps up the original series and movies nicely. And it was nice having a movie with Kirk that didn't have him dealing with a mid-life crisis.

The Motion Picture - I love the look of this film. Robert Wise created an incredible film. It is a shame the story was not as strong. Still, it is a personal favorite, and the strained relationships between Kirk, Spock and McCoy make for an interesting subplot.

Could be the three best from certain points of view.:techman:

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

I'd have to go with Star Trek II as my favorite. Kahn was just such an awesome enemy, I really hope they DON'T use him in the next movie. I'm not sure that element of Trek can be recreated. Anyway, the Wrath of Kahn is my #1 Trek film.

First Contact is probably second, although I have to admit I wish they had used the Borg a little differently. Exploring the Earth's first handshake with aliens was pretty neat, but I wish the Borg had been used on the big screen to kick some serious ass. Still First Contact is an awesome movie.

The Undiscovered Country has a real charm to it. The movie was fun.

The Voyage Home had a great message.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

The Undiscovered Country- This is the movie that got me into Star Trek in general. I liked the political aspects of the movie, many scenes are memorable, and it was a good send off.

The Wrath of Khan- Exciting throughout, the best villain, what is there to say that hasn't been said? A few good sci-fi concepts like Genesis device and the creepy space bugs.

The Search for Spock- Christopher Lloyd was excellent in this. I liked the crew risking it all for Spock. The sequence stealing the Enterprise was epic.

These would be my favorites, and although TNG is my favorite series none of their movies match the above in my opinion. I'm more positive than negative about Star Trek 2009, but it isn't on the level of the above for me.

Of the 11 Star Trek cinema films made so far, what 2 or 3 films,
are your current favorite ones and please separately say why,
for each fave Trek cinema film named (as in for the film's better
script, the acting, direction, FX, or a combo of all of these or
any other factors).

TWOK - "I don't like to lose."

FC - The expression on Riker's face when Deanna passes out.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

1. Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

I like it because of admittedly nostalgic reasons but more than that, I liked it because of: The epic feel of the movie, the special effects and Jerry Goldsmith's landmark score. The refit of the Constitution class Enterprise was brilliant as were the other designs in the film. I also kind of liked the fact that the story was a hybrid of The Changeling and Immunity Syndrome. Finally, I liked the character arc that Spock went through in the film. In fact, I really liked the Spock-centricity of the movie.

2. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Even though I enjoyed ST:TMP, TWOK is among my favorites because it was so different from TMP in that it was a sequel to Space Seed. I thought Montalban picked right up from his performance in Space Seed and did a great job as Khan. While I wish the production design had remained more consistent with TMP, the visual effects of TWOK are one of the reasons this one is one of my favorites. This one was obviously well-written and had some true drama. The death of Spock is one of the greatest and emotionally impacting scenes in all of Star Trek. James Horner's score for this one is excellent and is a worthy followup to Goldsmith's score for TMP -- although I wish they had kept his theme from TMP for TWOK.

3. Star Trek: First Contact

The best and only film worthy of the TNG cast. The story was good -- although even at that point, I was burned out on time travel in Star Trek -- and the performances from the cast were top notch. Goldsmith's score was excellent as always and ILM took their game to a new level for Star Trek films. This is as good as it got for the TNG films...it was all downhill from here...and for Star Trek in general until the release of the JJ Abram's film.

I have to say it was tough not picking The Undiscovered Country...as that too is one of my favorites...

FC - The expression on Riker's face when Deanna passes out.

That was priceless.

For me, depending on my mood for viewing, it would be ST09, FC and TWOK. Right at the moment I love watching ST09, as just so much fun.

ST09, TVH, TFF = fun
TMP = SF
TWOK, TSFS = action & pathos
TUC = action & political analogy

It's all good.:techman:
