Survivor: Samoa

I found Shambo's reactions interesting. She faked surprise pretty well, even acted pissed along with Laura. If she can keep that up then it might really benefit the old Foa Foa people.

This was definitely a great tribal council, though I would have preferred Laura to go. It was so much fun to watch.

The next person voted off Survivor: Samoa... Laura!

Good-riddance.

A decent episode, though I'll admit to get partly suspect on Russell keeping on finding the HIIs.

The way they explained how they did the tie seemed odd to me, in the past I thought I recalled them just going with whomever had the most previous votes.

Anyway, interesting episode and I'm glad to see Laura gone.

And my heart still beats for Monica.

:adore:

They tried it that way. They've also had the tied individuals compete in a fire-making contest. The rules often change between seasons. For instance, here are the ways the immunity idol rules have changed over the course of the various seasons:

Hidden immunity idol

In the most recent of the US versions, hidden immunity idols have been made available. These idols, typically a small object that fits with the theme of the Survivor location, are hidden near camp or located on Exile Island, with cumulative clues given to a select player (in Guatemala) or to exiled or kidnapped players (otherwise) as to its location. Once found, the player that possesses an idol may keep it or transfer it to another player prior to the start of Tribal Council, and it may not be stolen from that player.[4] The player is not required to show this idol to other players, though may use it as a bargaining chip for alliance and voting purposes. Other players may discover the ownership of the idol via any means within the rules of the game, including peeking into other player's personal possessions. In the first few seasons of the twist, only one idol was ever in play, but in Survivor: Fiji, Survivor: China, Survivor: Tocantins and Survivor: Samoa, two hidden immunity idols were made available to the players (one located at each camp). The hidden immunity idol can only be used up until and including the Tribal Council of the final four or five players, depending on the season.
The use of the idol by a player to become immune has changed through the seasons:

  • In Guatemala, the player with the idol was required to show the idol prior to the vote in order to become immune. The other members of the tribe were then not allowed to vote for this player.
  • In both Panama and Cook Islands, the player with the idol was required to show the idol after the votes were read to become immune. If the idol holder had received the most number of votes, the player with the next largest number of votes was then immediately voted out. If the idol holder was tied with the most votes with another player, that player was also immediately voted out.
  • From Fiji onwards, the player with the idol was required to show it after the votes were cast, but before they were read. The idol could be given to another player at this time, allowing that player to use the idol if they so desired. The resolution remained the same as with Panama and Cook Islands. According to an interview with host Jeff Probst, this change achieved a "happy medium" of the previous idol/immunity mechanisms.[5] This has resulted in players being voted out of the game without playing the idol (in China, Micronesia, Tocantins and Samoa)
During Guatemala, the hidden immunity idol was not returned to the game after its use. Since then, if the idol is played, or the player with the idol leaves the game without playing it, the idol is replaced at a new location to be found, as long as the means by which clues to the idol's location are still given out and that the idol can still be played at following Tribal Councils. During Gabon, the contestants unanimously decided to throw a hidden immunity idol into the sea. In this case it was not replaced at a new location. In some seasons, false hidden immunity idols have been fashioned by contestants; these have no value at Tribal Council. Probst has stated that the production team indirectly encourage contestants to create these fakes by means of supplying the camp with many materials that could be used to fashion the idol.[6]

I'll miss Laura, though I would have been sad had Natalie gone too. I was expecting a double-tie though and the dreaded purple rock of fate.

I agree I'm starting to get suspect about Russell's skills in finding these idols...

What can I say: wow. The turnaround from 8:4 to 4:5 is complete, what an amazing achievement.

And Russell really knows every single fucking stone around camp.

No mystery here. Russell keeps finding the idols because he gets up early, goes looking for them, and doesn't stop until he finds them. Meanwhile, the other castaways sit around the camp and worry about whether Russell will find another one.

Er, why don't you get off your butts and go looking for them yourselves? And don't give up after making a token effort of poking under a few rocks?

Russsell is a sexist egomaniac, but you can't fault his worth ethic!

Russell gets up earlier than everyone else, it's how he sabotaged Foa-Foa's camp and they never knew. I bet Jaiyson never knew Russell stole his socks until he saw it on tv ;)

Of course next week's promo looks dicey for Russell. If he was caught sabotaging Aiga and everyone lines up against him (and he doesn't know it) then he could leave with the HII unplayed.

BTW looking at that post from wikipedia, the cook island/Panama rules for the HII sounded way too easy. You got to see if people voted for you before you played it to save yourself? Wow. Lame. I like it this way it requires a bit more strategy.

Although I kinda thought Russell made tribal council a lot harder than it had to be. I was expecting him to give Natalie the HII to play. He didn't play it himself so if John didn't flip on the re-vote the chances of continuing on would have went to down to random chance.

I don't think Russell is in bad shape in the next episode (I think next week is a recap), that's just what the preview want to make us think.
John, Dave and Brett are (probably) talking about Russell; but I would bet anything that Shambo, Jaison and Mick are talking about someone else (my guess would be Monica, because I think Shambo dislikes her the most).

Do you seriously believe Shambo, Jaison and Mick would turn on Russell just because of a couple stupid chicken??

I could be wrong, but to me my interpretation makes more sense than ex-Foa Foa compromising their situation immediately after finally getting the upper hand over ex-Galu, especially with Shambo still out for revenge.

And I am almost certain that the reason Russell didn't play the immunity idol was that he knew what John was planning on doing so he kept the idol for later.

BTW, I saw an interview with Laura on Zap2it and I found this part pretty interesting.

So you knew John was the person who flipped, even before last night?
Yeah. I knew John was coming after me, even back when Russell Swan was in the game. What people don't know is that Brett and I have a really tight alliance. I knew his family from my church, so Brett and I are tight. So the Galu foursome we're talking about [
Ed's note: The four men], Brett would tell me what was going on, so I knew that John was really threatened by me and Monica's alliance, he wanted me out. It was win-win in John's eyes because he's finally getting me out but he's not spearheading the "Let's get Laura out" movement.

So did you know Brett before "Survivor?"
[
Ed's note: Laura was not allowed to answer this question]

I just watch last episode and i have to tell you i am little angry how the game has turn out to be. Laura probably the best player in the game was voted out. Also it is getting strange how easy Russell keep finding this idols. Russell should have been voted out last week but he keep finding those idol without any clues. I am started to suspect the producer are twisting the game in favor of Russell. Overall Russell is a bad player and i want him gone asap. Damm you Probst and Brunett.

Despite that it looks highly suspicious and in the back of my mind I'm kinda wondering.... I doubt the producers are "helping" Russell find the idols. I don't think they even can do that as I'm fairly certain that there's certain rules and regulations "governing" competitive shows that makes those sort of things impossible to do. That's to say, Survivor's producers can't legally manipulate the game like that.

Last week I was wondering at Russell's luck at finding the idols too, but this week not any more. He works to find them. He gets up early and is sneaking around all over the place searching. Even the Foa Foa tribe remarked at that this week. I was cheering so loud when Russell found it, especially after the way he got Dave to follow him and tire Dave out so that Russell could go back to that location. Awesome!

Don't get me wrong, but I don't think there's any way he can win this. Sooner or later, his tribemates will oust him.

I always thought that after the merge, someone should start an alliance of the meek and use them to get rid of the strong first.

I thought the same thing about Richard Hatch in S1, that there was no way he could win as people saw what a manipulative ass he was. But he prevailed because he controled the game. Right now? Russell is controling the game.

I don't know about anyone else, but I am starting to hate on Shambo more than Russell. I can't believe someone that stupid can breathe.

Yeah, can't say I'm a big Shambo fan either,

Monica, though, I'm a huge fan of. I like when she left and then pulled down her bikini bottoms to un-scrunch them from her ass.

Wow, that was awesome!! I couldn't stand Laura, very glad she's gone. I don't think she was all that great of a player, especially after hearing her comments after she left. She still hopes a Galu member wins?? Um, hello!! There is no Galu. Two of them are gone (one of them SHE voted out!), and two of them just voted her out! She might as well just say "I want Dave or Brett to win." Why do these people not get that it is an individual game at this point? At least John had some brains to not let it go to the rock of fate. Dave is just stupid for wanting that. If John makes it a tie, there is a 1 in 8 chance of him going home. If John votes for Laura, there is zero chance of him going home. Do the math! Same would be true for Dave, but apparently it never occurred to him.

Russell does look like he's in trouble next week but even if everyone did plan to vote him out, I don't think there's any way that he would not find out about it. He would overhear or suspect something and use his idol. And then his one vote would decide who goes. I feel doubtful that he can win but I do think he can make it through next week.

What an exciting episode.

I have to say, it's very cool how the former foa foa tribe members are playing. Russell worked hard to get the chaff out of the tribe early, and it left him with a stronger "team" to use once the merge happened.

I agree with John's decision, but that's a shortsighted way of looking at it. Thinking just from week to week is not strong strategy in Survivor. In the end the goal is winning a million dollars, so you have to try to give yourself the best shot to do that and not just "survive". So taking a risk to keep your alliance dominating may be worth more than staying for sure.

And "Laura greatest player":
