The ONLY thing I hated about STXI (please explain)

I've never understood why people seem to think Star Trek should be kid friendly. I'd like to see it as a serious drama that adults can watch and enjoy, not a kiddie show.

Yes, because those are the only two options. Black and White that's all there is.

I think this movie is perfectly fine for kids. Cover their eyes/ears for the one or two scenes/lines in it that kids can't see/hear but beyond that...

If we're going to talk about things kids might find disturbing, I'd think people being blown into space during the Kelvin attack would be far more disturbing than any single line of dialogue or hinted-at acts of intimacy.

Have to agree DonIago. It was a pretty wrenching scene listening to that women scream and plea before being sucked out of the Kelvin. Much worse than Kirk in his underroos.

I personally didn't mind this dialogue..because the movie was rated PG-13 and wasn't intended for any pre-teens to begin with. Hello..can't you say RATING WARNING?! :P Anyhow, I wished they would have also gone about five years into the future and given Kirk command of the Enterprise then instead of the end of the movie.
Two things that bugged me about this movie where-the end of two cultures, so to speak(even though there are only 10,000 vulcans onboard the Enterprise now) and the love interest between Spock and Uhura. I..simply...did...not..get..that! But I guess it's an "alternate reality" movie and in an "alternate reality" movie, things are a bit different. :D

PG-13 doesn't mean "no one under 13 should watch this" just that parents should be advised that parents should be aware that material in the movie may not be appropriate for persons under 13 and to make their own judgments. And, honestly, Star Trek should be rated G when you compare it to all of the stuff shown and done on prime-time TV.

When I watched this the other night with my family my niece (7) came in and watched it and she loved it. She knew to cover her eyes when she saw Kirk in bed with Gaila and we told her to open them when Kirk cock-blocked himself so my niece could see that Gaila was green.

Oh really? I thought it meant that parents should be cautioned to watch it before hand. :) Anyhow I think the rating is justified because there was a little swearing in as well as some sexual innuendo that isn't intended for preteens. :)

There is only ONE thing I hated about this movie. And I hated it with a passion and would erase it from my dvd if I could.

Uhura: "I thought you were a dumb hick who only had sex with farm animals."

I HATE THIS LINE. It is crass, vulgar, jarring.. and frankly I don't get why she said it. I just don't get it. Since when did being a dumb hick equate to bestiality? As a put down it doesn't make much sense, as repartee it's a huge failure. Now as a put down I get that it says, "you can't get women, specifically ME" but I think there would be much better ways to say it.

Now.. it has occurred to me that I'm just not getting something about this line, that everyone else is sitting there having a chuckle and I'm missing the boat. This is not a "what did you hate about STXI" thread, it is a please comment on this line thread.

I agree I thought that line was over the top. I also didn't like the line when the Vulcan bully called Spock's mother a Whore. That was also too much.

I may be Johnny-Come-Lately, but. . .

When people chose insults, they don't usually play nice. Most of the time, they hit below the belt. That's just how it works. I doubt this will change any time soon, even by the 23rd century.

No, that's American morality at work: it's acceptable to kill and maim people in horrific ways, but you can't use naughty language or kiss girls.

I have to say, I agree with the OP. That line was vulgar and embarressing, and just didn't belong in a Trek film IMHO. In fact I'm not really all that fond of that entire bar sequence; even the loud rock music in the background seemed tacked on.

Loud rock music... would you expect them to be playing in a bar in Iowa? Mozart's 5th Symphony?

I don't think Star Trek is necessarily at its best when it aims for "pretentious and high brow." It might be appealing on some level to watch your Trek characters spending their free time sculpting, painting, composing spoken word poetry or studying archeology... on the other hand, one day you watch James T. Kirk get piss-faced drunk and get beaten up by five cadets from Starfleet academy and suddenly it hits you, "Wait, this is happening on Earth. Where real people live. Close to where I live. Cool!"

Just sayin: there's something to be said for reliability. Highly intellectual characters on top of an ivory tower might give you something to aspire to, but at some point you have to get back to ground level and play with characters that come from (more or less) the same place as the audience.

Polkas.

Well, considering the people in that bar would've been listening to 300 year old music...
