Rap Music Should Be Included In Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

No. Rap is not rock.

Though, if Rap artists want to recognized similarly in some kind of hall of fame then why not just make a rap and Hip Hop Hall of fame instead.

I mean, the friggin' Bee Gees are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Does anyone here really think the Bee Gees are a rock band? Even if you disregard the disco stuff? They didn't exactly rock out on "New York Mining Disaster 1941".
Neither did The Beatles in the songs "Yesterday," "In My Life" and dozens of others.

If you say the Bee Gees don't belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, then be prepared to argue that the Beatles and the Beach Boys don't either. Then you can get rid of Simon & Garfunkel and everybody else that purists deem to be "pop" and not "rock."

You haven't read very far back in this discussion, have you? The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has included non-rock and roll artists pretty much from the beginning.

Too late though, rappers are already in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and that's the way it's gonna stay.

Frankly, I can't believe it's 2009 and people are still debating whether or not rap and hip hop are valid forms of musical self expression. If this were 1989, I could maybe understand it, but rap has only been influential in the world of pop music for what, thirty years now?

People are just as bigoted towards Afro-Americans as they used to be years ago, and that extends to music, too.

Sadly, I do think a lot of the criticism comes down to not liking the kind of people who listen to rap, you know, "those" people, and instead of just saying that, we get all these ridiculous rationalizations for why rap is not music. Such as "it doesn't rhyme" or "it glorifies violence", which are both things that can be said about a lot of rock and heavy metal.

I mean, I might find people who love Twilight to be insufferably annoying, but I'm not going to argue that it isn't really a book.

Sadly, this probably is true.
However, what's ironic is Rap music is a million dollar industry seller. So more than just "those people" are buying it. Everyone here in NYC, Black, White, Brown, Yellow to everything in between are playing Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" due to the Yankees winning the World Series.

I didn't really have to, since I've been there, and seen it's incomprehensibility (but I skimmed through the whole thread). Doesn't mean it should. I just object to it from a standpoint of logic though. It doesn't make sense.

So are a lot of other artists I'd consider to be some other genre of music other than rock and roll, like disco, and folk. It's pretty strange if you ask me. You don't slap a label that says "milk" on a gallon of orange juice, you don't put pornography in the childrens' movie section, similarly something that's not rock and in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, shouldn't be there, in my opinion.

At least 3 or 4 years worth of specials there. No need to add other categories. Imagine if Alan Jackson was nominated? Would we be so forgiving? Grand Master Flash as an inductee was outrageous enough. It be like putting RUN DMC in there because they do a few guitar riffs, and did a remake of an Aerosmith song. Match that up with Heart's Barracuda. Which band deserves to be in the Hall of fame for ROCK. Not rap with a few guitar chords mind you. The same with country music. They use guitar. Why not nominate Garth Brooks for the RRHOF? I don't agree with the likes of madonna and Micheal Jackson either. How they got in before Led Zeppelin is beyond me.

Ok. Well then. That sums it up, the whole awards ceremony lacks artistic integrity then.

Absolutely agreed. Even though I don't even like rock music, they shouldn't put baby's milk in with the bathwater.

In other words, you're equating inducting rap artists into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with showing porn to kids.

Maybe they just have a broader and more inclusive definition of rock and roll. Speaking of which:

Def Leppard
Kiss
Led Zeppelin
Twisted Sister
Billy Idol
Joan Jett
Pat Benatar
Heart
Bon Jovi
Cheap Trick
George Thorogood
Meatloaf
Guns n Roses
Quiet Riot
Poison
Judas Priest

That's a really narrow and restrictive list. There are a few artists I like in there, but it really doesn't overlap much with any list of great rock and roll I'd put together.

Bear in mind that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a commercial enterprise. It's supposed to attract crowds to show up and visit the museum. If it takes the narrowest, most conventional definition of rock and roll, it's going to appeal to a smaller percentage of the population.

I don't care what they put in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it is entirely up to the foundation. Whether an artist is in the hall or not won't change my interest in there music.

Yep. I'm reminded of a post I made in this discussion 11 days ago. Nobody cares about the Hall of Fame, nobody would change their taste in music because the Hall of Fame included or excluded a particular artist, so who cares who's inducted?

Those bands are the very definition of Rock and Roll. Or the term Classic Rock. If they wanted to broaden their horizons, why not add Green Day, Creed, or Collective Soul. There are other ways of updating the Hall of Fame without drastically changing it.
