any one else sick of the arrogant mac vs pc ads?

The cheapest mac is not $1000. It is the mac mini which is 699 I think.

The commercials are one thing, but if you actually use a mac for any extended period of time, you will see that OS X is stable, smooth, crash proof and problem free. It's exceptional software and the hardware is beautiful.

If that's not for you, great. Enjoy your garish, cluttered, backwards OS and your cheap hardware, what do I care?

(By the way, I have both)

I could say the same thing about Windows XP.

lol, a picture is worth 1000 posts, here's 10 of them!

The video at the end was hilarious. :guffaw:

This has always been my favorite video.

"My name is Hunter Cressel and I cut together everything you saw today... :heavy sigh: on a Macintosh."

I also love it when he kicks the iMac and it just explodes.

Yep - I'm reduced to just unplugging the frakkin' thing on many occasions. :rommie: Then again, I could say the same for my PC.

rofl, in the interest of fairplay...

less than an hour ago i uninstalled a recently added freeware game, it had a built in pop-up generator... was getting very annoying.

when i uninstalled it at the end it had the usual question "reboot now or exit?" (ironically the dialog had a mac osx skin and feel to it)

i was busy with other things, most importantly of which a drawing i'm working on, so i clicked the exit without restarting option.

guess what happened? well, i lost about an hours worth of work because it corrupted the autosave file when it abruptly closed down autocad (and everything else) without the chance to save...:wtf:

edit: Windows 7 btw

When I saw the early ads I didn't agree with them but thought they had a point and were reasonably amusing. But the more recent ones started getting annoying and turned into a Windows bash-fest, and the latest ads against Windows 7 were just petty. I prefer the fact that MS's ads focus on what PCs can do rather than insulting their competitors.

Actually it's $US599 - I've just checked (was going to make the point you did :)

Apple have to be onto something with a design - how many manufactures come out with something the size of the mini would be great for a business environment. Instead you pay a premium from HP. Dell etc etc to get their ultra-small form factor systems.

They've had great sucess with their all-one designes (the iMacs).

And maybe you could build an equivalent to a MacPro for a bit cheaper but it wouldn't be built as well.

And the Xserver is also a very nice bit of kit (just never had the chance to play with one).

For me, a huge downside is how the cheapest Mac you can buy is $1000. That pretty much trumps all their "Macs are easier to use", "Macs get less viruses" claims from the commercials, which I don't put much stock in in the first place.

And the funniest thing is, when Microsoft called Apple on that in their ads, Apple lawyered up and threatened Microsoft with legal action. Considering the misleading nature of most of their ads, that shows me that Apple is made up of a bunch of pussies who live in their own little kool-aid drinking bubble.

And what's misleading about Apple's ads?

And how many 4 years do you know that are doing multimedia presentations with Windows?

And what's misleading about Apple's ads?

1. Macs are immune to viruses. All those hacker tests of different OSes say otherwise. Security by obscurity...yeah that's the way to go.

2. Computers with OSX don't crash as much as those running Windows. In the days of Windows 95/98 I'd agree 100% (as those OSes sucked ass), but from my experiences certainly not since XP and beyond.

3. Apple making fun of Microsoft for spending a lot of money on advertising when everyone with functioning ears and eyes is bombarded with Mac and iPhone billboards and TV ads all over the place.

4. Apple claiming the iPhone could access all parts of the internet, which actually got them in trouble in Europe leading to the ad being pulled.

5. Apple's ads for the earliest models of the iPod Shuffle claiming that random play and not having a screen was somehow a special feature when comparable flash players at the time had a screen.

6. The crux of most recent Mac ads: Windows products are sooooo awful, use a Mac instead! Yet Apple has Boot Camp and support for loading this awful, awful OS onto its overpriced hardware.

^ Agreed 100%

I've worked with Mac's, I've built PC's from scratch. Those adds are 10 years out of date. The biggest stumbling block for me is the cost of Apple products. I just shelled out almost $2K for a MacPro for my son to use in college. My current PC (that I built) is faster and cost 1/2 as much. Sorry, I'll keep my PC.

Q2

So tell me - how many viruses do you know of that are out there for the Macs? How many anti-virus programs? For one company Apple has a lot of systems out there and enough to justify a/v products if there was the demand. The fact that there isn't a demand.

secondly Apple isn't obscure - their market share is something like 10% which makes them one of the largest vendors out there of comptuers.

finally OS X is based on FreeBSD (they hired a guy named Jordan Hubbard away from the FreeBSD project years ago to get it going). FreeBSD is a true unix descended from BSD (Berkley) Unix. It's got a long track record of reliablity, security and a lack of viruses

And beyond your own personal experience how many windows systems have your maintained. Just because your computer doesn't crash doesn't mean others do.

I have a client who has both pc's and macs. Somehow he alwasy manages to break the Windows install but the Macs (iMac 24's) run without a hitch

4. Apple claiming the iPhone could access all parts of the internet, which actually got them in trouble in Europe leading to the ad being pulled.
Yes and Microsoft is just so truth with claims it makes about it's products and business practices (let me know when Apple is prosecutred in the EU for anti-comptetative practices).

5. Apple's ads for the earliest models of the iPod Shuffle claiming that random play and not having a screen was somehow a special feature when comparable flash players at the time had a screen.

I think you're splitting hairs because a screen something the size of the a USB thumb drive doesn't really serve much purpose - sure you might seen the song name but that's about it.

6. The crux of most recent Mac ads: Windows products are sooooo awful, use a Mac instead! Yet Apple has Boot Camp and support for loading this awful, awful OS onto its overpriced hardware.

Actually that's apple being smart. It realised that some people do need to use Windows based products and provided a way for them to do with out the need to buy say Parallels or Fusion. At lets face it - if there wasn't the demand for this sort of thing Microsoft would never have released virtual PC for Mac back in the G4 days (even if it was a god-awful thing), Virtual PC or Hyper-V nor would VMware be selling their Virtualisation software.

And how much would an quivalent windows laptop to what your bought your son?

A Dell latittude E5500 spec upto the same level as the MacBook Pro 15" (starting price US$1699) comes in at $1663 before Dell give you a discount (and if you son is a student he could of gotten the education discount which takes off 10%).

Of course you could by a cheaper entry level Dell and if you're lucky it will still be working by the end of the school year.

Plus if you actually had any idea you'd realise that any desktop PC is going to be faster than a laptop due to the compromises that have tbe made (starting with the extra price paid for the mobile versions of the processor - you can't just pop standed desktop chip - the heat and the power draw will kill things very quickly).

Just to chime in on this one, my dell inspiron 1545 cost me about a grand. The mac book pro that my buddy just purchased cost him closer to 1700...and yet his only had 2 gigs of ram (compared to my 4) as well as less hard drive space. Im not sure what his processor was, but it probably wasn't much better than my core 2 duo @2.5 ghz
