2009 CMA Awards Discussion

Did anybody else watch the CMA Awards from Nov. 11? No matter what your opinion of Taylor Swift is, it is amazing that she has won the industry's highest annual honor at only 19 years old.

Standout performances for me were Taylor Swift's opening, Brad Paisley, George Strait, Keith Urban, and Martina McBride. The opening dialogue with Brad and Carrie Underwood was among the very best show introductions I've seen. The jokes were well-written, and the pair carried them off marvelously.

Overall, I did enjoy the awards quite a bit this year, and I think they have gotten better in the past few years.

I didn't watch the CMAs but I really am having a hard time evaluating my tastes in music after I found out the winners. I like Country Music, but a lot of the stuff that comes out now really isn't Country music. Taylor Swift, for one, is not country music. Now she is Entertainer of the Year and I just wonder what the heck that says about the industry that a 19 year old who has literally been pushed to the front of the line while other artists work their asses off is now the head of the entire industry, or at least according to said industry, represents the best it has to offer. People say Buddy Holly's death was when Music died, I just have to wonder if Taylor Swift winning signified the death of Country Music finally.

Don't get me wrong, I like some of what Swift does and she is a good songwriter, but she's not all that great as singer (Winning Female vocalist was a joke by the way) and just her winning EOTY feels wrong.

^Yeah, I feel much the same way. She reminds me very much of Avril Lavigne, except with an acoustic guitar and cowboy boots. They have the same style of songwriting - extremely simple and almost dumb-downed feeling. And many of their songs are about the same exact topics (You Belong With Me sounds just like Sk8er Boy) and sound almost identical. So why is she considered country music when her songs are so obviously plain old pop? I have no idea. And why is she considered so amazing when she's done nothing new or exciting? I have no idea.

I saw bits of the show, it was okay. Nothing too intriguing for me.

I am friends with the daughter of the guy who announces the thing every year... that's all I have to say.

Bravo. Well said. Country music has become something else. It may be it's own unique genre, and it can even be enjoyable to listen to, but it's not country music anymore and hasn't been for some time now. Swift's sweeping of the awards is very representative of what's happened to the industry.

The only counrty I listen to is Deana Carter.

I didn't see it, I'm not sure if she was up for anything this year.

Thought it was weird that Carrie Underwood kind of cut of Paisley at the end as he was trying to give some praise to Taylor Swift...

Seems the mag is trying to produce some controversy where there isn't any. As someone who had seen the rehearsal explained in the comments, the last couple of lines were scripted and on the teleprompter and Paisley accidentally read one of Underwood's lines ("I can't imagine a better night") and Underwood came in a little early with the next line, presumably trying to get the reading order back on track.

Agree with George 100%, the genre has been taken and morphed into something else. You know, back with the soundtrack for O' Brother Where Art Thou? was causing a stir, I had a glimmer of hope that maybe it would stir some interest in traditional country music. Alas, it was but a temporary blip. :(

Agreed. Now, I love Carrie Underwood and I think Taylor Swift is a sweetheart, but what they sing is not country music. As I said earlier, what we're hearing now is classic rock with pickup trucks. This goes for most modern country. It has little, if anything, to do with country music.

Why do people get so hung up on labels when it comes to country music? Just like there is a difference in what is called rock music today versus 1950, country music has undergone shifts as well. Saying country music is a convenient shorthand for referring to the type of music that the radio stations and music companies label as country, and it is not a value judgment. I don't care if you call Brooks & Dunn Lynyrd Skynyrd with a cowboy hat; what matters is whether or not the music is good.

Back on topic, another performance I liked was Carrie Underwood. I'm not a big fan of the song "Cowboy Cassanova," but the singing was spot on, and the choreography on stage reminded me of Reba McEntire's "Why Haven't I Heard From You."

I have the same feeling...I like Avril though and I am liking Taylor alot too.

Personally, I like some of Taylor's songs, but she's just not a good live performer at all. For my money, Martina McBride has been the best female voice in country music for quite awhile. Also, I love George Strait. He's a class act all the way. That said, maybe the highlight of the show was the Zac Brown Band performing The Devil Went Down to Georgia. I was kind of speechless after that!

Didn't watch, but she is hot right now( and she's hot) next year who knows who’s going to win.
And Wynona Judd is just jealous because she's old and fat.
