A dozen albums from 2000-2009

The favourite band topic has people listing a lot of bands, and a lot of old ones, at that, so here's an attempt at doing something more focused and more current: name a dozen albums released since 2000 that mean a lot to you.

In no particular order, and by no means all the albums I could include:

The Streets: A Grand Don't Come for Free
Burial: Burial
Richard Hawley: Coles Corner
Amy Winehouse: Back to Black
Interpol: Turn on the Bright Lights
Jesu: Conqueror
M83: Saturdays = Youth
Dalek: Absence
Ladytron: 604
Gnarls Barkley: St Elsewhere
Goldfrapp: Seventh Tree
Johann Johannsson: IBM 1401 A User's Manual

Nice idea. Only 12? I'll just go off the top of my head then, try and keep it to ones I listen to the most. Probably 75% of the music I own is from this decade...

Porcupine Tree - In Absentia
System of a Down - Toxicity
Muse - Origin of Symmetry
The Mars Volta - De-loused in the Comatorium
Depeche Mode - Playing the Angel
Deftones - White Pony
Arcade Fire - Funeral
Cult of Luna - Somewhere Along the Highway
Hell is for Heroes - Transmit Disrupt
Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero
Fever Ray - Fever Ray
Rammstein - Mutter

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - No More Shall We Part
Leonard Cohen - Ten New Songs
Rush - Snakes and Arrows
Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around

I can't think of too many other really big albums for me this decade.

Tori Amos-American Doll Posse
Tori Amos-The Beekeeper
Tori Amos-Scarlet's Walk
Kataklysm-Prevail
Kataklysm-Epic: The Poetry Of War
Slipknot-All Hope Is Gone
Slipknot-Vol 3(The Subliminal Verses)
Slipknot-Iowa
In This Moment-Beautiful Tragedy
Walls Of Jericho-With Devils Among Us All
Bush-Golden State
KoRn-Untouchables

Oh God, am I getting old. I hardly recognize any of the "artist's" names, let alone know any of their music.

Now, where did I put that Sinatra LP?

Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
Eminem - Encore
Disturbed - The Sickness
System of a Down - Toxicity
Rob Zombie - The Sinister Urge

Damn... this is harder than I thought it would be. A lot of my contenders are from '99 :(

Stone Temple Pilots - Shangri-La Dee Da

Then in no particular order:

Radiohead - Kid A
Black Crowes - Warpaint
Scott Weiland - Happy In Galoshes
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
Alice In Chains - Black Gives Way To Blue
Velvet Revolver - Libertad
I Mother Earth - The Quicksilver Meat Dream
Killswitch Engage - As Daylight Dies
R.E.M. - Accelerate
Metallica - Death Magnetic
Foo Fighters - In Your Honor

I don't own that many, but here goes - all of these are albums I own and like, many of these were from the early to mid 2000s:

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free
Gorillaz - Demon Days
Muse - Absolution
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
The Fratellis - Costello Music
Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better
Daft Punk - Discovery
Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head
Fatboy Slim - Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars
The Streets - Original Pirate Material

Honourable mention: Cassetteboy - The Parker Tapes

Hmmm. I seem to own more albums from 2000-9 than I realised.

12) Dropkick Murphys - Blackout (2003)
11) Sleater-Kinney - One Beat (2002)
10) Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros - Streetcore (2003)

Pearl Jam - Backspacer
Mark Lanegan & Isobel Campbell - Ballad of the Broken Seas
Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death
Battles - Mirrored

Really though, there have been so many great albums this decade, all that list represents is the first 12 I thought of.

1. Who Killed... - The Zutons
2. Funeral - Arcade Fire
3. American Idiot - Green Day
4. Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
5. Employment - Kaiser Chiefs
6. Elephant - The White Stripes

8.The Marshall Mathers LP - Eminem
9. A Rush of Blood to the Head - Coldplay
10. The Strokes - Is This It?
11. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
12. Editors - The Back Room

I have loads more albums but those are probably the 12 most distinctive ones that recall different memories, and the various periods of my life. Well, from the last decade anyway. There's other stuff I'd throw in that's older.

Hmm I'm not sure if I've bought a dozen albums that mean a lot to me since 2000.

Chinese Democracy - Guns N' Roses
Laundry Service - Shakira
Oral Fixation vol 2 - Shakira
She Wolf - Shakira
Don't Believe the Truth - Oasis although it doesn't really mean a lot to me, but it's pretty good.
Avril Lavigne's first two albums, her last one wasn't as good.
Contraband - Velvet Revolver was good but I skip most of the songs if they come on now.

This was easier than I thought it'd be. It seems newer music has affected me more than I imagined. In no particular order:

1. Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
2. Boxer - The National
3. Poses - Rufus Wainwright
4. Hedwig and the Angry Inch ST

6. Good News For People Who Love Bad News - Modest Mouse
7. Picaresque - The Decemberists
8. Original Pirate Material - The Streets

10. "Singles" - The Long Blondes

The more I think about it, I would have to add as #13...

30 Seconds To Mars-A Beautiful Lie(2005)

It is a great album. I haven't really checked out the new one.

That's on my list, too! I love that record, it's got some really great tunes. I saw them live, they shared a gig with Linkin Park. Boy, that was one of the best days ever. I'm looking forward to listening to the new album.

My favorite albums since 2000 are below, but I don't know that any of them mean a lot to me (or that any albums from any year do).

Lifehouse - No Name Face
3 Doors Down - The Better Life
Matchbox Twenty - Mad Season
Evanescence - Fallen
Dido - No Angel
Michelle Branch - The Spirit Room

There aren't any other whole albums I've liked, but there have been many single songs released that I like a great deal.

I tried to make it a mix of favorites, unique albums, and influential albums. The order is pretty much most recent to least recent, but it gets mixed up if I remembered an album and stuck it in late.

Neon Bible - Arcade Fire
Black Holes and Revelations - Muse
Demon Days - Gorillaz
Good News For People Who Love Bad News - Modest Mouse
American Idiot - Green Day
Elephant - White Stripes
Songs for the Deaf - Queens of the Stone Age
A Rush of Blood to the Head
Toxicity - System of a Down
Kid A - Radiohead
The Moon and Antarctica - Modest Mouse
Oh Inverted World - Shins

Honorable mentions to Year Zero by Nine Inch Nails and The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance (generally not a fan of them, but that album went above and beyond what is typical of their type of music).

9. Supernature - Goldfrapp
10. "Singles" - The Long Blondes

With Ladyhawke, are you talking about the film soundtrack? That movie is kinda old!
