Happy Armistice Day!

It just went 11am, November 11, 2009 here. We had the firing of the cannon (those of you who are friends on my facebook page can see it).

Hard to believe, all those years ago. Who'd have thought... the war to end all wars would be followed 21 years later by another one...

God you're a long way ahead, it's not even the 11th yet here.

Remembrance Day is important to me, I hope more businesses observe it this year with all the loss that's been in the news recently. I've been disappointed with the observation of the silence in recent years.

Here we celebrate it on November the 4th (armistice between Italy and Austria-Hungary), but happy Armistice Day to y'all.

As a veteran I'd appreciate the day off, unfortunately my business doesn't celebrate armistice/veteran's day.

Anyway, a big thanks to all veterans.

Happy Armistice Day, everyone. Here's hoping for a world with no more war.

^ Indeed. Had an interesting conversation about war and the united earth. I won't go into it here, as probably not the place for it.

Big thanks to all veterans.

I was in a shopping centre today when an anouncement was made that it was it would soon be 11am and could people observe a minute of silence. My son and I stopped what we were doing, as did some other people, but others just continued to shop as if they couldn't afford to give up a minute of their time.

^^The boys and the girls who went over? I don't remember there being any girls .

Of course, I also find the entire Remembrance Day observance abhorant. A great disrespect to my brothers and sons. Two minutes: well great, now you can wipe them from your memory for another year and feel comfortable without having to confront your society's atrocities. For those of us who have such people in mind continuously, this "show of respect" for two piddling minutes is quite disgusting. Every year I have to grit my teeth all day.

I would suggest people think about what it actually is they're "remembering" and what function this observance is really playing in our societies.

It's on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month so that everyone can join in a single act of remembrance. I think you need some anger management DN.

I do indeed have considerable anger over my society's refusal to address its flaws and admit its mistakes, but I do apologise if I came off too strong there. :) Only keep in mind that the treatment of our sons is a permanent concern of mine, and this observence is designed to sweep that issue under the rug. You say it is about "remembring". What are people remembering? How are they approaching the issue? It's not about remembering or acknowledging anything, but about avoiding responsibility and avoiding confrontation of the issue.

This is a very twisted social event that reproduces the exact sort of thinking that contributed to so much suffering and death.
