Is it true that Paramount is going to shaft us on the DVD extras?

I may be in the minority, but I never really cared all that much for DVD extras. All I want is the movie, so the regular "bare bones" DVD is perfect for me.

That's usually the way I feel. However, this is one movie that I actually want to see the extras. And as for BD as opposed to DVD, this movie is actually the impetus for me to buy a BD player.

This is what happened when VHS was replaced by DVD, video cassettes never had extras, that was Laser Disc's, but then DVD came along and made both obsolete... and at that time, no one wanted to convert (even Quentin Tarantino made a fuss about DVD's), but it turned out that the DVD technology was WAY better. Now we're in the HD world. We need to keep up, and we'll be happier (or else!). But it seems that we're headed for a time when we'll just download movies and shows right to our Digital Dolby THX HD Wide-Screen LCD Plasma DVR TV's which will exist as an implanted chip in our brains, with 40 bonus hours of extras and special features for a 2 hour movie. Me, I'm just gonna stay in my basement and watch a vintage mirror stereoscope film of a horse running in a 30 second loop over and over.

The way I figure it is that the technology will continue to improve, so I'll have to get another version of it eventually, but just not right now. Before too long, it'll be all digital downloads anyway as physical media period is phased out, IMO...
We may be in the minority, but I'm with you on this. Extra tracks bore me to tears; literally. I start yawning, my eyes tear up, and I can't see anything.

They made the movie; it's the work of art. Everything else was left out for a good reason.

Woo-hoo! I'm paying extra for the Blu-ray, I should get more stuff, right?

I'm sure somewhere out their someone's complaining that the skinflint studio isn't releasing the movie on Betamax.

^ Speaking of, I just ran my Star Trek 2009 Media fund (a plastic cup with the words "$$$ Star Trek XI Movie Money $$$" written on it in sharpie) through the Coinstar machine at our local Kroger, and I saved enough change to buy the Blu-Ray Special Edition at Walmart on the 17th! :D

^^^ Get the Target version in the plastic model ship display instead! Hella cool!

I just zipped over to Target's website to see what the box would look like and Ohmigod, I am going to Target instead!
I will take down a busload of nuns and a wild pack of hyenas to get this Blu-Ray set opening day!

Victory! Helmsman, set course for Target!
Engage!

BD

why Blu-Ray is being abbreviated as BD.

The data storage and video business needs to have designators for the various forms.

Blu-ray Disc (BD), sometimes called "Blu-ray," is an optical disc storage medium

The "Mini Blu-ray Disc" (also, "Mini-BD" and "Mini Blu-ray") is a compact 8 cm

Recordable (BD-R) and rewritable (BD-RE)

(BD-Video) video-based player profiles

BD-Live requires the Blu-ray Disc player to have an internet connection

I bought the two disc DVD a week ago (as it has already been released in Australia). I am quite happy with the extras. I think the gag reel was funny. The commentary was passible.

There weren't a lot of extras but I only paid about $24 for the DVDs so I wasn't expecting too much.

I keep hearing that the BluRay version will have a ton of stuff that won't be even in the deluxe multi-disc DVD version...sounds like a ham handed attempt to force us to convert up to Blu Ray...
Eventually, we'll all want to convert up to blu-ray.

I'd do it across-the-board today, if only they were making a blu-ray multi-disk changer. This is because I want to still be able to load my multi-CD and multi-DVD sets into the same device and have the same functionality I have today. The added appeal of blu-ray still isn't appealing enough to have to GIVE UP capabilities I currently have. I shouldn't have to "downgrade" in order to "upgrade" in other words.

The first 5-disk player that can play Bluray, DVD, or CD... I'll be buying that. And then (and no sooner), I'll "upgrade" to Blu-ray and everything I'll buy from that point forward will be blu-ray... until the next generation comes along (what, "X-ray?"). And I won't "upgrade" to that unless I can continue to play all my existing media on it as well.

Well, this Sony model holds 400 discs, but if you can swing $799 it would probably be a good option!

Why not just get another player? With the right universal remote (i.e. one that is named Logitech Harmony :D ), it's seamless to use two or more players.
Oh, I've had a 969 for a few years... it died, and I have a "Harmony One" now. I've got every device in my rigs... in my bedroom or living room... on this one device, along with about 18 different preset "activities" I've configured.

However, my receiver has a limited number of inputs, and my entertainment center has a limited amount of space. I don't plan to rebuild everything just for this purpose. I want one player, not six or seven different pieces occupying a space as big as a man! ;)

What gets me is that they make a 400 version and a 200 version. How about a sane number like 3 or 5? Seriously?

Same here.
I don't have time to go into hours of extraneous stuff, that's what "The Art of Star Trek" will be for.;)
