The ONLY thing I hated about STXI (please explain)

There is only ONE thing I hated about this movie. And I hated it with a passion and would erase it from my dvd if I could.

Uhura: "I thought you were a dumb hick who only had sex with farm animals."

I HATE THIS LINE. It is crass, vulgar, jarring.. and frankly I don't get why she said it. I just don't get it. Since when did being a dumb hick equate to bestiality? As a put down it doesn't make much sense, as repartee it's a huge failure. Now as a put down I get that it says, "you can't get women, specifically ME" but I think there would be much better ways to say it.

Now.. it has occurred to me that I'm just not getting something about this line, that everyone else is sitting there having a chuckle and I'm missing the boat. This is not a "what did you hate about STXI" thread, it is a please comment on this line thread.

I agree I thought that line was over the top. I also didn't like the line when the Vulcan bully called Spock's mother a Whore. That was also too much.

I love that line, because it is followed by up a very Kirkesque reaction.

I didn't like the farm animals line either. It was one of the few non-family-friendly moments in the film for my preteens.

None of that stuff really bothered me (although I can understand why it would bother other people).

No, the one thing that really bothered me, and that I wish I could erase from the DVD, is the end of the movie where Admiral Medea gives Cadet Kirk command of the Enterprise. Even with suspension of disbelief, this was just too hard to swallow. I don't understand why they couldn't have inserted a "Five years later" tag before the scene, and given Kirk command then. It would have completely fit Pike's line of "you could graduate in three years and have your own ship in eight" (with the "Three years later" tag already in place earlier in the movie).

Coming from a rural area myself, I find that this tends to be the opinion some stuck up people from the city tend to have towards people like me. People like JJ Abrams probably actually think that about people from the country and so found that line hilarious. Abrams also apparently seems to think most people from the country aren't very intelligent, which is why such a point was made about Kirk's intelligence. At least that's my take on it, your mileage may vary. ;)

Uhura was simply trying to give him the brush off. She wanted none of him.

That's how I see it. Uhura's a bright, intelligent woman who is self confident. Having an obviously cocky, "I know I look good" civilian hit on her brought the sarcasm and the claws to the forefront.

She liked him right away or she wouldn't have bothered with such a challenging insult. If she really thought he was a dumb hick, she would have ignored him.

Since when did being a dumb hick equate to bestiality?

Since Cain and Able.

What's the old line?: [Insert Regional Name] Where the men are men and the sheep are scared.

Yes, I thought that, too. Or, she was at least intrigued by him even if he wasn't going to get anywhere with her. I mean, even as a loser barfly, that old Kirk charm and confidence was there. You couldn't NOT like him.

Kirk never took the line as an insult, either. As J. Allen said, Kirk's response was perfect.

The line went right over the heads of my young daughters. They were actually most upset by the bar fight that followed. "You promised me no blood," my youngest kept telling me.

This is exactly why i didn't like the line and would have preferred that they not used it.

Meh. Like I said above, the bar fight upset my girls more than any lines said in the movie. That was a pretty intense fight scene for Trek. Kinda shocked me, too.

I liked the exchange, it was funny. Real-life flirting and joking around. As for pre-teens... I understand your concerns, but I like my Star Trek to be friendly, but not too much family-friendly. Besides, I don't think kids should be totally shielded from any mention of sex. I learned about human sexuality when I was in grade school.
