USS Cortez? Really?

:D

(If that wasn't a very clever joke, I must say I still enjoyed it!)

Try raising this point next time Enterprise is rescued by the USS Hitler.

Well, Hitler rescued me... But the signed (stamped, actually) edition of Mein Kampf still resides relatively far back on the bookshelf.

Personally, I'd like to see the U.S.S. I'ma Kill You With My Bigass Guns, Mothafucka.

When it came time to rename the USS Sao Paolo, Captain Sisko was tempted... Oh so tempted...

USS English Motherfucker, Do You Speak It. It would work on a couple of levels.

I think this ship should be on patrol near the Tamarians. "Muthafucka, if you say something about 'Darmok & Jalad' ONE more time..."

Yeah, Hindenburg is just bad. What about the USS Graf Zeppelin? Anybody object to that?
USS Led Zeppelin, USS Eagles, USS Motley Crue (think of the possibilities there!)....
Training ship for recent Academy graduates:
USS Hannah Montana
USS Jonas

After all, everyone loves music... right?

You have good taste!:bolian:
By then we should have some flagships to be proud of:
USS Michael Giacchino
USS Jerry Goldsmith
USS John Williams

In memoriam:
USS Elvis Presley (crew overdosed on fried peanut butter & banana sandwiches after stop at Risa):cardie:
USS Michael Jackson (crew repeatedly court-martialed after alleged incidents on Risa during sleepovers):alienblush:

I'm not sure if the USS Michael Giacchino is one to be too proud of just yet. Better than the USS Leonard Rosenman I suppose.

Though I think the USS Denis McCarthy would get in even ahead of the USS Jerry Goldsmith for sheer weight of contribution.

The U.S.S. Ron Jones would perform valiantly for its first three years of operation, only to be unceremoniously decommissioned by an admiral who thought its battle tactics were just too innovative.

So what I'm getting from this thread is that it's best not to name your starships after a person. Unless that person has given a name to something else significant, like another ship or a city (which is how Columbus becomes okay). Principles, other ships/craft, famous battles, famous places, those are good. Fictional characters? After all, apotential, say, USS Galahad doesn't risk any baggage as it's a fictional person.

I'm talking generalities, here. I mean, I've heard Red Sox fans do the "Yankees Suck" cheer even when the Yankees are not, technically, in the game, and there's not even a single Yankee fan IN THE STADIUM. I mean, what's the point of that? The impact of a chant against one's rival is severely diminished to the point of irrelevancy when the rival is not around to hear it...

So I take it you're not a fan of the University of Texas and Texas A&M's dueling fight songs, then? ;)

Part of me is relieved to not have to moderate a controversial thread, but it might be a good idea to keep the spammy name suggestions to a minimum (especially baseball ones).

Grazie.

You should really check out his entire body of work. Whether you are a fan of the new movie or not, his work is excellent. I still love the soundtrack for Pixar's The Incredibles. His music set the mood for the periods depicted: flashbacks to the 40s, 50s and 60s eras were believable because of the scores for each.:bolian:

Didnt you get the memo, if you worked on Star Trek 09 all past and future work you do will suck. ;)

QFT. I really get that impression from some people. If the good LORD Himself liked it, I think some would become atheists for that singular reason.:vulcan:

Principles, other ships/craft, famous battles, famous places, those are good.

Are they? Battles tend to have at least two sides, the winning and the losing (USS Little Big Horn, anyone?). Principles and ideals are often fought over (USS Eugenics? USS Expansion?). Places have histories even when they are not sites of military conflict (USS Columbine? USS Bikini? USS Golgatha?). And previous ships would have been named by people from a different era who might not share your values.

Fictional characters? After all, apotential, say, USS Galahad doesn't risk any baggage as it's a fictional person.

Fictional characters are often created for a controversial purpose, reflecting a set of ideals (USS G I Joe? USS Malibu Stacy? USS Darth Vader?).

And ultimately, the very act of naming a tool of destruction after a positive thing is likely to be as objectionable as naming it after a negative thing...

Jumping into this thread late, and kind of an aside, but I've never liked this trend for naming ships after people, either in Star Trek or the real life present. I'm sick of aircraft carriers, for example, being named after presidents.

They didn't do this in TOS (except for the shuttlecraft). You had ships like Enterprise, Defiant, Constitution, Constellation, Yorktown, Intrepid, etc. By the time of TNG, it seems like every flippin' ship was named after a person. Similarly, seems like every ship the U.S. Navy commissions these names has to be named after some person. Blech.

I mean, really, which name better portrays a sense of majesty, prestige, and power? U.S.S. Enterprise or U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford?

Re: Non-english names of ships (or the lack thereof).

When the UFP was founded, Humans were the "bridging race" ... the guys who all sides liked. The de facto language of human spaceflight at the time was English (due in no small part to the American and English influences), thus English becomes "Terran-speak" to the rest of the galaxy and adopted as the standard language of starfleet. I can see the Vulcans, Andorians, etc arguing over a language standard until some human steps in with the english alphabet and says "here, use this".

If english (and thus, the alphabet that goes with it) if your standard, then names have to conform to that standard to be pronouncable and printable. There are non-english ships in starfleet, but most are english in origin.

Who cares, really :)

How about a Starfleet ship named after an ALIEN pioneer, like the first Bolian who flew faster than light, or the Andorian who was first to make first contact with another race, or the first Tellarite to circumnavigate their globe? As I stated before, the UFP's ship naming system is way too Terra-centric. No more Earth history names for ships!

Okay, because of your icon of Commander William Adama, how about-the USS William Adama?;):guffaw:
