Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and why?

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

My fourth would be FC, which is almost as close to Trek XI as TWoK is to TMP.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

I really enjoyed Trek XI this summer. To me the movie brought back the sense of light-hearted fun that had seemed to drain out of modern Trek in recent years. Having never been a real fan of the original series, I found that in this incarnation, I actually liked the characters, something that never really happened with Shatner's cast.

My sentimental favorite is Insurrection. I know I'm virtually the only Trek fan in the world who admits to loving this movie. I love the music. I love Donna Murphy. I love the rekindled Riker/Troi romance. I love Geordi getting to experience normal vision. I love the Ba'ku. I saw it three times in the theater. In re-watching it recently I was able to see some of the flaws that are always pointed out, but I still couldn't help loving it overall.

The Voyage Home is the TOS movie that I will watch again and again. It's just good fun. It's warm-hearted, enthusiastic 80s happiness wrapped in a lovely Star Trek wrapper. :D

The only Trek movie I come close to disliking is Nemesis, and even it has a couple redeeming moments. Only a couple. The rest of the movies I at least enjoy, with perhaps First Contact, The Wrath of Khan, and The Undiscovered Country being the next three on my list of favorites.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

TWOK - It brought back Kahn with revenge, hate-filled badassedness. It put Kirk in a situation where he had to face his own mortality, and it killed off his best friend (kudos to Shatner for playing that well). I still have fond memories of being 13 and watching it for the first time in the theater.

First Contact - It brought back my favorite TNG villian and delivered lots of action and excitement throughout the whole movie. The action on the Enterprise cut with the excitement of launching the Phoenix made it a great popcorn film. I didn't care for them introducing the queen, but that was my only quible with the film.

Trek XI - This movie was exciting for me start to finish. It was a chore to sit through Insurrection and Nemesis, so something that kept my attention the whole time was a welcome relief. I didn't have an issue with the changes in the ship or the characterizations. Something about this movie just worked for me. Also, a friend of mine played an extra in one of the sickbay scenes, so it was cool to see his bald head on the big screen.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

1. Star Trek VI: This one epitomized what Star Trek is all about for me. A thinly veiled allegory of real world situation, the breakup of the USSR. It was just so perfect to match the events of Trek, which had been created perhaps at the height of the Cold War, to the end of the Cold War. And it provided a perfect send off for the crew, having them preside over a peace agreement with their toughest enemy. Up until that time, ST 6 also had perhaps the best Trek space battle between the Enterprise and the cloaked Klingon vessel. I also liked how the Enterprise crew exhibited biases and had to learn how to overcome them by the film's end.

2. Star Trek II: Khan is still my favorite Trek villain, though he's had some tough competition over the years with Dukat, Kai Winn, the Borg Queen, etc. The battle of wills between Kirk and Khan were iconic. Spock's sacrifice still hits me. His good bye was so heartfelt.

3. First Contact: Though it didn't give me the full on Borg-Starfleet battle(s) I really wanted, this was by far the TNG crew's best outing. The last time the movie's really had a sense that TNG was conceived to be an ensemble show, though the seeds of the Picard-Data tandem had already sprouted in this film. Another seed of destruction was the creation of the Borg Queen. She worked well for the film, but not so much on Voyager. But this movie had good action, a good script, humor, and fine acting. The guest stars were perhaps the two best of any Trek movie that weren't playing villains. I had been anticipating this film like no other Trek film and saw it multiple times in the theater. The only film since that I've seen more than once in the theater was the latest Trek film.

The rest:

4. Star Trek
5. Star Trek III
6. Generations
7. The Voyage Home
8. The Final Frontier
9. Nemesis
10. Insurrection
11. The Motion Picture

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

For myself, my top three favorites:

Star Trek XI - Oh, where to begin? The top notch visuals, the dead on characterizations, the warmth and humanity, the dashing thrillride from start to finish, the epic space battles, the timpano music loudly playing with gusto as our heroes come to the rescue, the cracking dialogue, the fun interpersonal humor and the great scope of this movie just sits it right at the top spot. I saw this movie more times in the theater than any other movie in my entire life. I love this movie. I really love this movie.

Star Trek V: TFF - There are quite a few issues with this movie, but most of them technical. I seriously enjoy this film. The best parts are the Kirk/Spock/McCoy brotherhood aspects, and as I mentioned in another thread, the scene where McCoy watches as his dad dies just grips me every time. The music is wonderful, probably the best part of the whole movie, and I loved the idea of the whole God/Shakaree/Cult Acolyte of Laurence Luckinbill's performance. This movie has more heart than an all women's 80's rock band tribute concert. It took ST09 to unseat this movie from the #1 position.

ST:FC - I watched this movie the other night for the first time in a long time, and I forgot just how great it really is. Wonderful scenes for each member of the crew, they all got their moment in the limelight. Picard's obsessiveness, his desire for revenge, Cochrane as a real man and the crew's reactions when faced with the real person instead of the historical figure, first contact scenes with the Vulcans were chill bump inducing, and I just have to say, Alfre Woodard is sorely underrated as an actress. She is incredible, and thoroughly convincing as a razor sharp woman who has just been thrown out of her element. Top notch, great movie all around.

1. the motionless picture. soothing, tranquilizing. it also introduced the klingon battle theme, which is a nice piece of music. here's a free download in mp3 http://www.4shared.com/get/11789687...sionid=227D60AD8D84A53CA47823B0934F1790.dc156

2. final frontier. thougthful, great interaction of the big 3 kirk, spock, and bones. low body count.

3.generations. so many great moments, i love the one when the klingon sisters watch beverly on their display and one says, disgusted, 'human females are so repulsive'

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

1. The Undiscovered country: A smart political film. The mystery is involving. The shape-shifter was cool. I liked see Worf's grandfather. Kirk: "Then let them die!" Awesome.
2. Insurrection: Based on strong ideas. Good character moments.
3. The search for Spock: A fun film. The Genesis planet was a visual delight (So was Robin Curtis.) Christopher Lloyd was great as Kruge.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

In order of Love:

1. STXI.. and not because it's shiny and new.

2. First Contact.. this film was very meaningful to me for a long time so it sits sentimentally at number 2 even though I probably enjoy number 3 more these days.

3. The Undiscovered Country. Plenty of cool stuff here, very exciting, great political story, contributes hugely to canon.

4. Generations. I don't know why this one is disliked though I hated the Nexus part the first time I saw it. A fitting crossover film with Kirk the star and the TNG cast playing very secondary roles. Soren is cool.

5. The Wrath of Khan. I think this is over rated or perhaps has just aged badly. However a few fantastic scenes elevate it into greatness.

6. The Voyage Home. Popcorn. Some hilarity ensued. "Not now Madelaine!!"

7. The Search for Spock. Well.. he DID have to be found.

8. Insurrection. A perfectly good double episode of TNG

9. Nemesis. Tedious, many missed opportunities. Annoying to have these Remans introduced. Opening scene on Romulus was good.

10. The Motion Picture. This is really a terrible film. I had seen it in the theater when it came out and not seen it since. Recently I bought the dvd thinking my dislike of it many years ago would be tempered by how much Trek I had ingested since and I would probably love it. Nope.. it was worse than I remembered.

I haven't seen The Final Frontier in years so I can't rate it. It's my last dvd to buy.

Star Trek - let's face it, it's 'exciting'
TWOK - well, it's got 'Khaaaan!' ;)
TMP - even though I've fallen asleep a great many time during that movie, it has something... grand (perhaps?)

What about the directors cut of TMP, have you seen that, its actually not as "sleepy", Wise did a really good job re-editing it.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

ST II : The Wrath of Khan
ST VI :The Unbdiscovered Country
ST VIII : First Contact

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

As with a number of posters, my top three would be:

ST XI - it is a lot of fun particularly Kirk's back-story.

TMP - great sound-track and Roddenberry's final TOS production. Makes one wonder what Phase II would have been like.

TWOK - great sound track, story proceeds from TOS.

Interestingly, these three are each new beginnings for Trek - TMP was Trek's restart after ten years of no new live-action productions.
TWOK was a new start for Trek after the TMP approach didn't meet with universal approval and ST XI is the modern restart, following a few Trekless years.

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

I'm really surprised more people haven't listed "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", and "Star Trek: First Contact" as their favourites. Are Siskel and Ebert the only people who agree with me that these three are by far the best of the series? They are the only ones I own and the only ones that I think are pretty much perfect that I can watch over and over again and still find new reasons to love every time.

I'm a little disappointed by the special effects at the end of "Star Trek II" and I think the first and third acts of "Star Trek IV" aren't as strong as the middle act (the stuff in the past), but these are the only Star Trek movies that I find endlessly endearing, entertaining, and exciting! Wow, that's a lot of "Es"...I didn't even do that on purpose. :D

For me, the others are way too flawed. They all suffer from one of or all of the following: poorly-written characters, excruciatingly long stretches of boringness, and irritatingly clunky story lines. I do love parts of almost every Star Trek movie, except Insurrection, Nemesis, and The Final Frontier (only because I barely remember it), but those three I listed are the only ones that I think maintain a consistent high quality in writing, acting, and direction from start to finish.

While The Wrath of Khan can be a bit of fun, I've long since lowered it's standing because the story no longer interests me in the way it is presented.

The Voyage Home is still a great romp, but it's no longer in my top 3 (although at one point, about 15 years ago, it was my #1).

I've actually started to enjoy Nemesis a bit more, though it will never reach #1 status, that one is currently taken by Star Trek XI. :D

Of course I have seen it - I own the DVD since it came out.
I hope they will re-create that version for BluRay.

The latest release of "TheVoyage Home" looks AMAZING. I thought the last release was great, but this one RULES!!! (not Blu-Ray, just DVD)
Sadly, The director's Cuts of TMP & STVI are not available....yet.;)

So how exactly is it better? New behind the scenes documentaries?

No, the PICTURE is so amazingly crystal clear & colourful compared to the previous transfer!
I'm keeping the older release for its superiour documentaries & interviews, though.:vulcan:

Re: Of the 11 Trek films made, what are your 2 or 3 favorite ones and w

The Undiscovered Country, First Contact, Star Trek

The Undiscovered Country: I thought that this was the only truly dark TOS story. There is moral ambiguity for the first time. The black and white, absolute right and wrong was gone. Previously, we had the federation as the best political entity in the galaxy standing for all things good and true. Human morality was the greatest. In TUC, Kirk is racist against klingons. In the all-human starfleet committee, someone says that the klingons would become "alien trash." We get an outsider's perspective on the federation, "The federation is a humans first organization where aliens are second class citizens." or something to that effect.

The political organization of the Federation is fleshed out more.

We see a ship that is not the Enterprise (Excelsior) being capable and not getting pwnd. Also, we get a Captain who is just as capable and competent as Kirk (Sulu).
