The technology behing the stargate likely existed before the Alteran/Ori split or developed in close relation soon after. Maybe the idea of a planetary network only came later, but not the technology.

What on earth makes you think that?

The split occured millions (that's plural, with the implication of it being on the heavy side) of years ago. That's an awful long time to just sit on such a technology and do next to nothing with it. I mean, we've only had any kind of real technology for about 10,000 years, and only modern technology for about 100 years.

By your logic, it'd be like saying that we've had modern computers since the last Ice Age, but we didn't think to use them for Internet (or anything else, really) until only the last couple of decades.

The technology behind it could have existed, just not in one piece. Wheels, engines, axles, and breaks all existed before Henry Ford put his Model T together.

Well, the Internet did come right away. Obviously we're not talking in millions of years but it took several decades before the Internet had any purpose. Much like the Ancient likely didn't need to go to other empty planets at the time. The probably started with the few colonies they had until slowly expand it for different reasons, maybe including to go to the other races. They also didn't need such network for them since they had FTL and Hyperspace technologies so who knows why the stargate network was developped.

Well, the Internet did come right away. Obviously we're not talking in millions of years but it took several decades before the Internet had any purpose. Much like the Ancient likely didn't need to go to other empty planets at the time. The probably started with the few colonies they had until slowly expand it for different reasons, maybe including to go to the other races. They also didn't need such network for them since they had FTL and Hyperspace technologies so who knows why the stargate network was developped.

We have planes and tranes and automobiles, but im sure someone is working on viable matter/energy transportation.

Theres always something new and better waiting to be invented.

Their gate system was a new and faster way to travel. That is why it was built.

To be fair, the scene is subtle. I didn't notice that until my sceond viewing of The Ark of Truth.

And the evidence that Vala was sent thru a stargate. And the Priors use them.

Perhaps the common people dont use em, if the gates are as old as Universe gates, as there seems to be no DHDs for the ooold ones.

Well, that actually makes a lot more sense... But still, priors use em...

The Ori could have come up with Stargates on their own, kind of like how the US and Germany were both trying to come up with the atomic bomb during WWII despite the fact that nobody had built one before.
I assume that wormhole travel was theorized by someone else, and the dude at the beginning of Ark of Truth 'had an idea' about how to build a gate for wormhole travel. Then, at some point an Ori scientist had the same idea and built their own version.
