Coins that have been from hell and back..

I'm looking at some change sitting here on my desk and I see a quarter that looks like it was plucked out of a volcano. It's black and tarnished looking. The thing looks like it's had a rough time. The coin is dated 1997. I just wonder what this thing has been through.

Ever come across relatively "new" coins and wonder how they came to be so shitty looking? (And, yeah 1997 isn't that "new" but I've seen, and have, just-as and older coins that look practicaly new.)

In my wallet right now:
£1 coins from 1983, 2000 and 2005
£2 coins, both 2001 (when the coin was introduced)
50 pence pieces x2 from 1997 (I believe without checking the year the smaller size 50p was introduced)
20 pence pieces, 1982 and one from 2008
5 pence pieces from 1992, 1995, and 1996
and a 1992 penny.

Our money seems to last a while, really I have coins on one random day spanning my entire life. As to condition, the newer ones are certainly shinier, except for the 1983 pound coin which is miraculously shiny as if it was minted yesterday - seems someone was messign about with some coke or mouthwash or something.

Can't be a fun topic to broach - I suspect that's why she still looks about 25 on my 1996 penny.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Even though our small change - 50 cents and under - coins were all replaced in 2006 with smaller-sized coins, some of the new coins are already looking like somebody pooped them out

The title of this thread reads, "Coins that have been from Hell and back". Is there something Trekker isn't telling us? I've encountered "young" coins that appear to have been "To hell and back", but not vice-versa.
