Star Trek Wins Casting Award

"Star Trek" won the award for Best Casting for a Big Budget Studio Feature, Drama from CSA.

"Star Trek," "Tropic Thunder," "Milk" and "Up" were among the films honored Monday night as the Casting Society of America held its 25th Artios Awards.

On the film side, the winners were April Webster and Alyssa Weisberg for "Star Trek" in the category of studio feature, drama; Francine Maisler for "Tropic Thunder" (studio feature, comedy); Maisler and Nina Henninger (location casting) for "Milk" (indie feature); Avy Kaufman for "Sunshine Cleaning" (low-budget feature); Kevin Reher and Natalie Lyon for "Up" (animation); and Jason Wood for "Bye Bye Sally" (short film).

No question that they did a tremendous job casting the film, so it's nice to see it get recognized.

On a side note, Junie Lowry Johnson, who was Casting Director for TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise and the TNG movies, won for "True Blood."

well I am not surprised because the cast were amazing all of the actors made the characters their own congratulations to the film

I think it's safe to assume it's for overall casting. All the awards (both film and TV) went to ensemble productions.

Considering the competition for the award I think MILK probably gave TREK a run for its money but in the end narrowly lost out. Well, whatever. Whether a close/narrow win or not, a win's still a win!

Milk won for Feature-Studio or Independent Drama/Comedy.

If just one actor was cast differently it wouldn't have been a fit and wouldn't have been nearly as good. It is a well deserved award indeed.

One of the categories for the SAG Awards is essentially Best Ensemble in a Film, which Trek could get nominated for. Not likely, but a greater possibility since its casting has now been recognized.

While you're ultimately right, I feel like they could have cast someone else other than John Cho for Sulu and we would have the same result. Don't get me wrong, I'm very much a Cho fan, but Sulu really didn't have much to do that would require someone of Cho's caliber, unlike the rest of the cast (Scotty's mania, Chekov's youth, McCoy's grumpiness, etc etc etc).

And this is very newsworthy as well. I'm so sure we can all credit Johnson for even our favorite guest stars, much less our favorite main cast members. Congrats, Junie!
