Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously)

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

Poor Risa! ... Where is everyone gonna go for a good time?

Wrigley's Pleasure Planet, Argelius, or Quark's.

Didn't Argelius ban all casino gambling though? I think it was an SCE story which said that.

Yes, but the narrator was being somewhat unreliable...;)

(Mr. "Abraham Silver" in David Gold's Tale from the Captain's Table).

^ Speaking of which, I wonder what exactly the hell this "Mak Dav Al" was all about anyway. I wonder if we'll ever get an explanation for that...

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

Just read it - it was ok but I still can't warm to the new characters - Chen in particular is written like a mentally slow 15 year old.

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

That's funny, I thought she was written like a mentally gifted 15-year-old. :D

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

I'm not a big fan of Chen myself....(Sorry, Christopher!) :p

Maybe she'll 'grow up' later on in the books, then grow on me...

All the other characters of relaunchTNG are pretty cool, I think.

I did find the game of Rivers to be pretty interesting; a Betazoid game where two people have domino-like pieces set up in front of them, and they have to lay a piece in front setting up land that will put the opponent in the midst of a drought or cause flooding, while irrigating their own territory...

Pretty interesting...

I'm nearly done with the book; I'm trying to get up-to-speed with the franchises....

I still need to read Unworthy, The Soul Key, and The Never Ending Sacrifice...

Note: I haven't gotten into the Titan series or even the New Frontier...

I think Chen has plenty of potential to be a unique and interesting character, even though the reactions to her appearances to date have been mixed, at best. We'll just have to wait and see what Dayton manages to do with her...

That was inspired by an actual game I'd played one summer way back when, except it was with a set of cards that had pictures of different pipes of different configurations, with the goal of connecting a water source to a faucet without any "leaks". Presumably, whoever marketed that game back in the '70s is long out of business, and in no position to sue for copyright infringement.

Waterworks? Played that a lot back in the early '70s or so, along with Mille Bornes.

Is that what it was called? I'm surprised there's anyone else who's familiar with the game, let alone knowing its name.

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

I wasn't sure of the name, so I googled it, and sure enough, it has a wikipedia entry, and a few web pages. It's even been reissued recently.

I don't know if I've ever actually played, but I know I'd seen the cards back when I was a little kid in the early '90s.

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

*inhale.* Okay, I have a long-pent up rant about the TNG-R characters.

I think that one problem with the TNG Relaunch cast was that the writers were trying to hard to write characters as if they were writing for Deep Space Nine. The TNG crew was essentially one big happy family; they would have disagreements on some issues but they would get over them. That didn't provide 'conflict' in the way that the cast of DS9 had -- Cardassians vs. Bajorans, Everybody vs. the Federation, and what not. For me this eliminated T'Lana as a character although I thought her initial premise of a person who counsels emotion from a logical view was golden. (I was disappointed she never found redemption.)

I think also that Zek didn't belong in the TNG tone/style. He was just too much of a soldier. With Worf as Picard's second in command and Zek as the security officer the feel shifted really far towards military Sci-fi. It actually turned me off in the way that the cast of the Star-Gates turned me off...just too military-ish. (I Think the book I'm referring to is "Resistance.")

T'ryss and Cloudhurry fit into the TNG atmosphere perfectly. Cloudhurry doesn't have the most complicated back story compared to, say, Garek, but she has a very defined and warm character. I think she actually sort of fills the void that Troi left behind when she transferred to the Titan as the one deeply in touch with their emotions. Plus, she doesn't have the vaguely defined Empath powers that provide us with obvious dialogue. :) T'ryss Chen is also positive spirited in the way the average non-Worf TNG character is. Her over enthusiasm is a character flaw that could prevent her from reaching her full potential in our world but is tolerated by the more enlightened humans of the future; she often reminds me of Barclay in that way.

I'm on the fence with Madakota and Elifki. They both fit the TNG style and tone but they're not exactly stand out characters for me. That being said, Geordi, O'brien, and Crusher have pretty low key characters, too. Elifki is fun as a foil for T'ryss, but a little on the quiet side. Madakota's most unique and memorable characterization for me is the time she brought her asymmetrical breast up when she was making a point about how things in nature aren't perfect. The thing with her long distance family is interesting, but not super dynamic. I won't miss her too much.

On the whole, though, I think the TNG-R cast is getting better and better as time moves on.

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

^ Whoa. Zelik, not Zek. T'ryssa, not T'ryss. Choudhury, not Cloudhurry. Kadohata, not Madakota. And Garak, not Garek.

My problem with the character is that she's written like a child or teenager not as an adult, so all of her interactions with other characters seem like the interactions between knowing adults and a child. It doesn't ring true for an officer in 'the service'.

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

T'ryssa definitely has some maturity issues, yes. She's brilliant, but she's undisciplined and has formerly had a bad habit of running away from responsibility. But that's part of the point of the character -- to give Picard a surrogate daughter and help prepare him for becoming a parent for real, while in turn showing how she learns greater maturity and discipline under Picard's guidance (and her own renewed sense of responsibility in the wake of the Borg attack on the Rhea).

And no, she's hardly the ideal of a Starfleet officer, but that's also part of the point. She was probably this close to washing out before the Rhea attack happened. But that incident made her re-examine her life and now she's working to improve.

But it comes across like fiction for kids with those drawn out and obvious 'life lessons', I should be thinking "how awful this has happened to character X" not "This has happened so character x can be given this lesson and character Y can realise this before the end of the book".

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

For some reason everytime I think of T'ryssa I can't help but think of Ahsoka from Star Wars: The Clone Wars - mainly the film.

Strange.

Re: Some thoughts on Losing the Peace (spoilers for the book obviously

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I actually quite like Ms. Chen. The idea of making her a surrogate daughter to Picard was a wise move on Christopher's part. With the death of Data, Picard really hasn't been anyone's mentor in a few years time. Worf is great, but he knows who he is. He's continuing his "schooling" in the ways of command through Picard, but he's not his "son" in the way that Data seemed to be (at least to me).

To me, Chen (along with Choudhury & Elfiki) seems to represent the next group of people that Picard will make into his starfleet family. He did it on the Stargazer (the Asmunds, Greyhorse, Joseph, BenZoma) and he did it on the Enterprise (TNG cast), so there's no reason to think he won't continue to operate in the same manner as he always has. I think Chen will continue to grow and eventually become as indispensible to Picard as officers like Geordi and Worf currently are. We just have to give her some time. She's only been on the ship for two TNG-R books and the Destiny trilogy.

Are we talking about LtP here? And if yes, could you point out specifically where you thought the story went into Afterschool Special territory?
