Charlene Masters and the Assistant Engineer

Listen, guys, I love ethnic conspiracy theories, too, but I think in this case, it's way off base, since the character wasn't intended to be black in the first place. -- RR

A few around here have an axe to grind. The name "Masters", the incorrectly colored uniform, the alternate engineering location. Big deal!

She was a beautiful actress that held her own and it gave us a spin on perhaps the size of engineering, in that there were sub-managers of different, sub-departments. At least that's how I choose to view it, as opposed to the on-screen result of the nefarious workings of some series exec that had issues with equality and race.

Her uniform and the location of engineering and her name should not be discussed.

She was beautiful and great and in charge and progressive and that's all that should be said.

I think that new little section of Engineering made perfect sense in context of the episode. Lazarus was trying to steal something, so if at all possible I'm sure he'd try to steal it from the most out of the way, lightly manned location he could find, not from the middle of Main Engineering in full view of a large staff who all know you don't belong there.

Can't say for certain that's what they were thinking when they decided on that set, but it would be more realistic.

Main Engineering is not always full of people, as Kevin O'Reilly in "Conscience of the King" could tell you!

^^

Come to think of it, Riley had Engineering to himself in the two episodes he was in: 'Conscience of the King'...and 'Naked Time'...

Makes you wonder what all those people in the hallways actually did...

 Very true...!

You notice they seem to look 'more busy' and 'alert' when a commanding officer walks by...

Hmmm....
