Just curious, anyone familiar with this series? I stumbled on the web page randomly from a Google search, and was somewhat surprised by how much is "borrowed" from Trek, BSG and perhaps other sources and given new names and stats. You can see what I mean from the ship list, with some vessels being clearly from FASA's Trek RPG and other sources.

Oh yeah, it's definitely inspired by other SF. I bought the game way back in the early 90s - I even mailed a check to the dude to unlock the Shareware version. The game itself was pretty good.

Oh wow, I didn't even know there was a 4. But the site's been dead for 4 years... it's too bad. He should freeware the game and just let it get out there.

Does (or did) he have permission to use some of the ships in the game? I'm more curious than anything, cause it just seems strange to me to pretend such designs wouldn't be recognized by their respective fans. Some of the designs are clearly original, and others are rather badly kitbashed.

Looking at the site, it's clearly amateur work. Not to slight the guy, but you can tell it wasn't put together by a real game studio of any kind.

There's no possible way he had honest-to-God permission to use any of the IP he used.

I think it's unapologetic in its art design. That said, the "brand" has been in existence for nearly 17 years (it's called VGA Planets after all). If anyone had a problem, they would have said something.

I suspect it's just been flying under the radar all these years, and is not popular enough for any of the IP holders involved to care.

Wow, I used to play that like 15 years ago. Even then I realised it was 'borrowed' :)
