Season Four

I have often wondered if they had some story ideas or written some scripts for Season Four, provided the Network renewed Star Trek for a Fourth Season. In fact, when I used to watch the animated series, I often thought of it as Season Four.

I know they planed on making another series right before TMP, but was aboned when TMP came into affect. But you could say The Animaited Series two seasons makes up for the seasons that was never made after season 3.So with both TOS and Animaied series we have a total of 5 seasons just like the 5 year mission.

I would say that the animated series 2 seasons would qualify for TOS's 4th season. We'll count all the mostly sucky movies as the 5th season and there ya go....mission accomplished.

TAS is the fourth and fifth years of TOS' five year mission. There you have it.

Were any of the TAS scripts based on ideas for TOS' proposed fourth season? I know Gerrold pitched 'More Tribbles, More Troubles' for TOS.

A while back, there were a handful of notes, treatments, and a couple of draft scripts for season four episodes floating around. They were extremely raw, though (and some of them were indeed 'recycled' somewhat for TAS)... unfortunately, I've long lost the archive of them.

It was mostly prelim work, and judging from memory on how crude it all was, I'm pretty sure it was done as more of a formality than a realistic expectation that season four would actually be made.

I know some of the early novels were.

David Gerrold's "More Troubles, More Tribbles" and "Bem" were originally proposed as live action episodes for a hypothetical fourth season.

There was also a two-parter by Alan Dean Foster on hold, featuring a former Klingon exchange student, Kumara, which ADF turned into the final two-thirds of his TAS adaptation, "Star Trek Log Seven". (See his essay in the recent trade reprints.)

A proposed live-action script, "The Beast" by TOS director, Marc Daniels, probably morphed into his "One of Our Planets Is Missing" (TAS).

And "The Stars of Sargasso" (with McCoy's daughter again) by DC Fontana was an unused script that probably inspired "The Time Trap" for TAS, with its "Sargasso Sea in space" concept.

There was also a Milton Berle vehicle script on hold awaiting his availability. (Was it "He Walks Among Us"?)

Myrna Culbreath wrote a version of her novel, "Triangle", as a prospective script for a fourth season, and she later reworked as an early Pocket novel with Sondra Marshak. And Kathleen Sky's novel, "Vulcan!", started life the same way.
