If they never brought Buffy back...

Let's pretend for a moment that Buffy actually ended at Season 5 and the rest of the gang never brought her back from the dead (or they tried and failed).

What would happen to the world?

At this point, Faith is in prison. There are no other Slayers around to fight the forces of darkness. The Hellmouth has no guardian.

Would Faith eventually return much like she did in Season 7 (we can assume Angelus was still brought back and that Wesley still broke her out of jail) and take on Buffy's role?

What do you think?

I think it would have been best if the show just ended.

Maybe then have a few more Buffy cameos on Angel.

The show WOULD end.

I'm looking for more in-universe speculation. What would happen to Sunnydale and the rest of the world without a Slayer?

Well, that's my point. With Buffy gone and Faith in prison, how long would it be before Sunnydale went completely to shit?

I'm just trying to have a little fun here.

I would think that somehow Dawn would become the new Slayer.
Giles would train her only to realize that training her would be different than training Buffy.
Dawn would feel the weight of her sister's legacy on her shoulders and would have to fight against the trio of nerds and later Dark Willow. Maybe she'll have that psych ward hallucination Buffy had Season 6 only hers would have the mother, the father, and Buffy back from the dead.
Failure to bring Buffy back from dead would probably add to Willow's descent into darkness.
Spike would stay around keeping an eye on Dawn, keeping his promise to Buffy whether the Scobbies like it or not. With Buffy gone, Spike wouldn't feel the need to get a soul of his own.
Xander and Anya would try to get married but I think the ending would still be the same.

I'm thinking perhaps a scenario somewhat like that depicted in "The Wish." No Master obviously, but maybe a definite increase of the vamp presence in Sunnydale. Human groups similar to the Whitehats organizing, since the increase in vamp activity would likely lead to the town's residents becoming aware of the existence of vampires.

All speculation though...

I often imagine what would have happened if Buffy never happened after the movie. But then I think that Whedon would produce some other hipster overrated crap that lemmnings would latch onto and consider the the greatest thing to happen to society since the movable type press.

TROLL AWAYYYYYYYYYYY!

I think Faith would take up the mantel. Somehow she'd be broken out of jail and would take up the fight - probably with some reluctance and in an anarchic fashion.

I think the Scoobies would try, and possibly fail at it. Angel might come and help. But eventually they would decide that they needed Faith. I imagine some kind of break-out. Faith could probably break herself out with Slayer powers.

What would happen? A new slayer would have been born since she died. We wouldn't have that stupid, stupid, stupid storyline at the last episode where anybody who can be a slayer is one. With no watcher to train them innocent people will get killed.

That already happened in season 1. The Slayer line went through Kendra and then Faith after that---Buffy's second death wouldn't have gotten anyone else Called no matter what.

Well, that happened too in some cases. For the most part Buffy was able to organize them and the Slayer army became self-policing, but there were a few incidents here and there, such as "Damage".

There are billions of people in this world. Some of them happened to be teenage girls. I doubt that they could gather them all. I personally think it's an another case of Whedon tripping on his feminism.

I just want to say to that guy.

A day may come when the hatred of Men fails, when we forsake our anger, and stop all abuse of women, but it is not this day

Only a few thousand (or was it hundred? I don't recall) were actually Potentials, though.

A few thousand? Thats a lot. Especially when they are spread across the world.
