Anyone contemplating a big purchase soon?

As soon as I get a settlement from an auto accident, I'm going to get: a plasma TV (living room) and perhaps one for the bedroom; a laptop for my son; a new mattress/boxspring; a water softener; a tankless water heater; and finally, some carpet in two rooms and the hallway.

If I could swing it, I'd by America and make everybody pay me rent.

Seriously though, my next big purchase will be the new Farscape complete series set next month. But It's gonna be an Amazon purchase so I save $50.00. Although, I was considering waiting til the Christmas season when Amazon offers deals, so the discount would be even higher.

My old '82 Suzuki GS750E. Sometimes I really miss this bike.

Bikes are one of those things I can appreciate in the abstract but just couldn't ever own myself. Nice fun thing to think about buying though.

Yeah, but I have no choice. I sort of need a bed.

Beds can be great indulgences too though, so think of that fun side of the purchase to assuage the cost! ;)

I've got a bespoke jacket in the works that I'll have to pay for at some point. Which reminds me; I need to ring the tailor tomorrow and see if it's ready for a first fitting yet...

I'm considering buying a ticket for the Paul McCartney concert in Berlin in December. The better seats seem to sell at 159 Euros, which is a lot for me. Tickets go on sale tomorrow.

Our house needs a new roof. Not exciting, but it's definitely "big," in terms of expense and square footage.

Got my eye on a new Snickers bar.

King Size.

If I was you, I'd go for the O Henry. Snickers suffer from some pretty insane depreciation the second you take 'em out of the convenience store. A couple years down the road, you'll be lucky if you can get 10% on the resale value.

As for me, the closest thing I've got coming up is a weekend awak in Montreal with my girlfriend. Not a purchase of something tangible, per sec, but a room in a hostel for a couple nights and train tickets amounts to a major expense when you're a student.

^ Yeah. The joys of homeownership. Not that there aren't any, because there most certainly are, but spending money on dull things like roofs and hot water heaters (we got a new one of those this summer) and some of the things you're about to do isn't one of them.

Buying furniture can be fun, though. Expensive and/or time consuming but fun.

Might I suggest you look into a metal roof? The expense is a bit more initially, but in the long run it is more durable than asphalt shingles and will last almost twice as long. When I build my next house, it will have a metal roof.

Plus, "It's good for the environment".

I just bought a house a couple of months ago, so there's no money left for big purchases. With the house and all the purchases that have gone along with it, I'm about "big-purchase"ed out at the moment. However, the house doesn't have a garage and I need somewhere to store outside-type stuff, so I do need to build a shed in the backyard. That won't be cheap. Before I had a house I used to love going to home improvement stores and looking at tools and building supplies and thinking about the day when I would have a house. Now, Lowe's loves me, but going there isn't as exciting because I hate spending money and I've spent a lot there lately.

There are things I would love to do, but I'm not quite comfortable paying for them all. I'd love to re-model at least one (if not both) of the bathrooms. Not cheap at all and I'm not even remotely handy, so this isn't something I could tackle myself.

I'd also love to replace the carpet, or possibly even hard wood (but that's probably not the best idea for a ground-level condo... it's cold enough down there already).

We've talked about that and it's definitely under consideration. Just have to see how much it'll cost, I'm sorry to say. I have never paid for a new roof, so I have no idea how much it'll cost...aside from "more than we want to spend," of course. ;)

This is one of those where I tell people, "You get what you pay for" :) To me, something like that is worth the extra expense.

Buying new furniture soon... a new, big ass couch you could lose yourself into, a new bedroom wardrobe, a new desk and a new coffe table.

Altogether expenses of about 1600-1800 Euros (about 2400 - 2700 $)

Just bought a bed and mattress a couple of weeks ago, next on the agenda are the bedside tables and a dresser, and perhaps a chest unit as well. Furnishing a new house is fun, but expensive, especially in this economy which caused my employer to eliminate all overtime :S

I had the fitting at the weekend, and it is going to be AWESOME when it's finished.

I just bought a house, so I'll be spending bucketfuls of money to get it into shape and furnished.

Yup. Actually, this is partly why I chose not to get a bigger place a few years ago and instead ended bought a second property instead. The cost of furnishing a new, bigger place would have been immense!
