The Weather Channel to air movies

I'm waiting for the lawsuit when someone flips the channel mid movie and takes one of the fake newcast some of these movies have as the real thing.

"Holy shit Ma' the poles are shifting...get the kids and the dog, we a better get in the root cellar!"
which is actually a good point, if the Weather Channel is too busy showing movies, what will weather related movies do when they want a TV channel to talk about the weather, since TWC is now playing movies & not reporting the weather.

The Weather Channel is owned by NBC, this isn't shocking, the channel really should be government owned.

How long until they run Al Gore's bullshit in movie form?

I never use the Weather Channel for my weather anyway; local news stations are far better and accurate in reporting and predicting the weather and covering storms live.

I hope they show old episodes of Newhart.

I love that show. I wish there was some way to get episodes past season one.

I really can't say that I'm the least bit surprised TWC is showing movies because the era of niche programming has been steadily coming to a close for quite awhile now, IMO.

Now where am I supposed to get my second-by-second weather reports?
For me, it was never TWC because almost every time I wanted to quickly see what the temperature is outside before I headed out, they were in a really long commercial break!

Oh, good. Now when the tornado rips through our town, we can all console ourselves with the knowledge that the special effects were way better than they were on Twister, playing not ten minutes prior when I really could have used some kind of weather map to see what was coming our way. /facepalm

J.

Yeah, I have to agree. This is stupidity in action. The Weather Channel serves a purpose, and that is to provide weather information to those who, like, need to know what's going on. It's bad enough that you invariably have to wait till they finish telling you the weather on the other side of the country before they get to your area, or what the pollen count is in some corner of the globe (the Canadian version is pretty bad for this), but now you're having movies that will interrupt this news for hours at a time. (I assume there'll be a scroll or something, but still.)

I can only assume this is an indication that the Weather Channel is starting to give up on the assumption everyone gets their weather from the Internet now. But as my parents keep saying, not everyone has (or wants) the Internet.

When Syfy started airing wrestling, I thought it was just stupid. This goes beyond stupid -- this is actually potentially dangerous.

Agreed. And it could be dangerous. What if there was some sort of weather alert on, and people couldn't see it... not every one has access to the internet (like the Weather Channel assumes). Really dumb move by them.

I'm pretty sure with the advent of digital cable and digital broadcasting now replacing analog everyone who can still receive a television signal probably has a dedicated local weather station on their provider.

I know in Philly there's the local weather channel, plus two or three separate weather channels from local ABC/NBC/etc... affiliates.

I really don't think that this will be dangerous. They already have non-realtime weather shows but they still interrupt those to give weather updates. Presumably they'll just interrupt the movie for the local on the 8s and if there's an emergency they'll probably just stop the movie. And it's not as if this is going to affect local stations in any way.

You're probably right on that one. But it's still not the best move. Probably.

This just in... a tornado the size of a skyscraper is heading toward Nebraska and everyone in the state will probably die. And now back to The Day After Tomorrow.

The movies will not get in the way of the alerts, they will continue to stroll on the bottom of the screen.

Also if you have cable and not internet, that's a little odd. Plus if the storm is so bad the local stations will report on it.

Saw this coming when NBC purchased TWC. I imagine the executives at nbc decided to see what they could do to enhance their investment.
