Best Comic Book Storylines

I *think* (it might not be correct) that a Graphic Novel was never published in a serialized monthly "issue" format - it's something that was always published as one single "book" (100+ pages or so).
That's correct, but in practice fans tend to use the terms interchangeably.

And they tend to get shelved together anyway, so unless you know the publishing history, it doesn't really matter.

So, what are my options for reading all these things? Do libraries carry them or am I looking at spending a lot of money if I want to read'em all?

I do almost exclusively via libraries.

Cos I read pretty much anything that is available to me in Marvel/DC - I am more timid about branching out into other things. I occasionally suggest titles to the library to buy (and they do buy them - I suggested some GL TPBs and Incredible Hulk TPBs, tho' some of the requests I never hear from again). Also for Trades published more than 6 months ago, there's always Inter Library Loan!

Occasionally I buy to gift stuff to my cousins who are young.

The entire run of 'Lucifer' by Mike Carey

A spin-off from Neil Gaiman's 'Sandman' it is one of the most entertaining, epic and satisfying storylines I've ever read. And Carey's Lucifer is a fascinatingly cold and singular character and is (for me anyway) the definitive representation of the devil in modern media.

I did it. I went out and bought my first comic in over ten years. Well, I guess it's a "trade." I bought and read Green Lantern: Rebirth. Awesome. Loved the story, loved the art. The guy at the store had a large display of GL stuff. He said it was the hot title. I asked him to give me a list of GL that I should read after Rebirth. On the list are...

No Fear
Revenge of the GLs
Wanted
Sinestro Corps War Pt. 1
Sinestro Corps War Pt. 2
Rage of the Red Lanterns

Then he listed GL Corps Recharge

To Be A Lantern
Dark Side of Green

Are these all individual issues or can they be bought in a trade? The reason I ask is that I noticed Rebirth is from 2004. I was wondering if any of the list items were already out in a trade.

All trades.

These three (No Fear, Revenge of the GLs, Wanted) continue telling the Hal Jordan GL story with a few "setups" for the upcoming Sinestro Corps War - (eg. The Sinestro 'You've great ability to instil fear' ring first chooses Batman - just 3-4 pages of extreme goodness). Besides these cool moments, I'd really not mention those as keepers.

However, The Sinestro Corps War (vol 1 and 2) and Tales of Sinestro Corps war (it is a separate trade, you don't have it listed but it kinda complements and adds to the 2 volumes), I would very definitely recommend for buying. Those are great fun! I don't really know the Green Lantern Corps trades too much. If there are things that will "tie" more to Sinestro Corps War, then I'd recommend buying those instead of the No Fear, Revenge of GLs, Wanted trilogy. The 'Rage of the Red Lanterns' is very needed in light of the overall "War of Light" that is going to happen in the GL saga (and is still happening to date)

I haven't really heard too much about it but the current "Blackest Night" event's (it's a current storyline that is coming in the GL and GLC monthly/weekly comics and also has a few specials which involve several different characters in DC) trades should be out sometime next year. Those should be another keeper.

Not a comic book guy, never been. When Joss Whedon started doing his "The Astonighing X-Men", I came in with high hopes. Those hopes were promptly raise mid way threw once it started getting more complex and defined than I had realized, and suddenly plotholes I had worried about, were being covered, and finally a great ending.

I seem to be the only person who ever lists Electra Assassin. I would have thought it would have been more popular.
I enjoyed it too. I think the combined Daredevil and Electra movies have colored a lot of people's perception of Electra the character.

There's also another Green Lantern collection coming in about a month "Agent Orange". This is the hard cover release, but you can get from amazon for only about $13.

It gets better. "Seed of Destruction" wasn't representative of the rest of the series. The writing was pretty clumsy.
