Survivor: Samoa

I hate Evil Russel.

I hate people like him.

I do not understand people who *do* like him.

It sounds to me like a rather serious character flaw.

I want someone to win the game by playing it straight -- proving it can be done. Liars, cheaters, sleazy bastiges... I want them to go down. Hard. Painfully.

Survivor is a game and I like people who are good at playing the game instead of just sitting there looking pretty. People who "played it straight" on Survivor either get voted out early or are lucky enough to be buddies with someone who does the dirty work for them and basically just cruised along.

So yes, I really like Russell, just as I liked Rob C, Boston Rob, Richard Hatch, etc., because they put their ass on the line playing the game.

It's like in poker - who's more impressive, the guy who gets pocket aces all the time or the guy who only gets shitty cards but still manages to get a big stack?

Indeed. the mental game is just as, if not more, important that the physical one. Both in the mental toughness to hang it out, and the ability to manipulate, scheme, and bluff the other players.

I think Ashley was neither as dumb, nor as loyal to Russell as it looked like on screen. And I think Russell knew that, and that's why she got voted out.

Apparently, Ashley was as clueless as she appeared. The St. Paul Pioneer Press published an interview with Ashley a few days ago (she's from MN). She said she believed everything EvilRussell had told her and that until the episodes aired, she had no idea he was manipulating everybody.

Is this online somewhere?

Thanks...

I always thought it would be cool if Evil Russel went on to win and gave the money to the the girls. I mean, he said at the start that he wasn't in it for the money but to play the game. It would be a hell of a mind fuck twist on the audience to build up their hate for this guy for the way he played the game to see him win and give away the money to his fellow tribesmen and women. He likes to mess with people, doing that would be just as much messing with the audience as with the players.

By the way, I've got to mention this absolutely brutal rain they've been dealing with. Did you see Shambo's hands in the challenge? Oh my gosh that was icky. And I love that those girls now regret choosing the blankets over the tarp. The fact that they couldn't even strategize, actually play the game, before tribal council because of the weather is very interesting and doesn't happen often in Survivor.

I think it was the third or fourth season of Survivor they were pretty much in a rain forrest and suffered some horrible rains.

So, when do they start talking about voting out Russell for choosing "comfort?" Or did he have enough people agreeing with him that it won't be an issue?

The next person voted of Survivor: Samoa is....

No one.

There was supposed to be a double vote-off tonight but "Good Russell" had a medical emergency and was taken out of the game so at the double Tribal Council Jeff informed all of the castaways that no one would be voted off.

During the reward challenge Russell struggled and towards the last phase of it seemed dazed, confused and even passed out, Jeff stopped the RC and called in the medical teams to check out Russell who had dangerously low blood pressure and, to me, even looked jaundiced.

Everyone was sent back to camp as the EMS took care of Russell, after a bit he tried sitting up, his heart-rate went up, he passed out again, and his heart rated dopped down low it was at this time EMS decided to pull him out of the game.

It's a real shame as I liked Russell and is one I wanted to win, his team now also has to elect a new leader and it looks like we get a re-shuffle/balancing of the teams next week (if not the merger.)

Yeah, I'm of mixed feelings about this episode. On the one hand, I won't really miss Russell as I found he took his leadership role way too seriously and came off as sexist and kind of arrogant. That said, I have to feel just awful for him - he was definitely determined and gave his all to everything.

Interesting watching how Galu split down gender lines in prep for the vote, but the guys decided to keep Shambo. It makes sense I think - she isn't much of a threat at all, and breaking up the Laura-Monica duo could do them good in the long run. The only problem with the plan is dividing the tribe right now when they're still going pretty strongly, while voting out Shambo wouldn't have harmed tribal unity at all.

I'm glad there was no vote at all though. I hate double-elimination episodes and think they're completely unfair. If you win the challenge you shouldn't have to vote someone out, simple as that. I'm hoping the double vote won't carry over to next week.

Speaking of hopes for next week, I'm also hoping Laura is just playing along and is smart enough to see through Russell.

Double elimination does suck and I hate it when they do that.

Keeping Shambo is the correct correct thing to do, even if she goes over to the other tribe. She may feel a loyalty to the guys of her tribe after the way that they comforted her by "suggesting" the way she should vote. Trying to break up those two girls (Monica and ???) is important.

It does look like a merge next episode, though it may be that the foa foa tribe wins reward and sends that girl (Monica?) to spy.

I'm betting on the winningest team to donate a member or two to the losingest team.

I'm glad they didn't do the double elimination after all; I thought that would have been an arbitrary and unfair way of ending the game for two people, and especially for Foa Foa since they didn't lose the challenge (it could be argued that Galu lost by default because it was one of their players who collapsed).

The banter at the "tribal council" was fun. I can't wait for Foa Foa finally starting to destroy those cocky idiots on the other tribe, which I'm convinced is what's going to happen.

I thought the Double Elim thing was pretty lame and Foa Foa was right about their luck because it sucks.

There was a previous episode where the older guy was struggling during the challenge and barely got through it and Foa Foa lost. So they ended up losing 2 people.

That should have been what happened this episode (shouldn't of had double elim) and then because of Russell collapsing the challenge should have been forfeit to Foa Foa.

Then Galu would have lost 2 people.

But man when Russell collapsing the second time I thought he was flatline and they were going to have to shock his heart or something. I really believe Probst when he said that was the most frightened he'd been of any medical situation in the game. Even in that previous season when you had that idiot fall into the fire and burn his hands, he ran into the ocean and we knew his life wasn't in jeopardy. It looked like you almost had a death in Survivor tonight.

For a very brief moment last night, I thought he was dead, then I realized real quickly that there would have been no way in hell they could have kept it quiet all this time.

My dad is convinced that some day they are going to have a fatality.

I did feel bad for Russell. Apparently he tried for a long time to get on Survivor and being on the show meant a great deal to him. But his enthusiasm kind of warped into overzealousness. He became so controlling that he wouldn't even allow himself to sit out a challenge. He was arrogant enough to believe that even in his weakened state, he was better than the four tribe members he had sit out the challenge.

I hate to agree with EvilRussell, but he's right about his teammates' attitudes. Instead of whining about the miserable weather, why not get to work and improve the shelter? They were getting wet regardless, so why not try to make things better? Of course, had they put more effort into building a decent shelter when they first arrived, they wouldn't have been in the situation to start with. They knew it was the rainy season.

Right, Pegaritaville, they were wet already, why not just get up and start weaving palm fronds together for an hour or so and fix their shelter's roof?? Or just add more layers and such? I don't understand. Maybe their energy was being sapped because of boredom, cold and hunger, still something would be better than freezing!

Is it just me, or is "evil" Russell the smartest player the show has had in a long time. Maybe they played up the whole villian role in the first episode, but since then he's been playing a great game and I actually wouldn't mind him winning the money. I don't think he's nearly as bad as the show has hoped he would be.

It was a very intense episode last night. Felt bad for the other Russell who went down but just that and all the rain, it really did feel like "Survivor" in the literal sense. Loved the Tribal council stuff, and hopefully this opens the game a whole lot more. Things just felt to be moving at a slow pace recently and I hope this helps pick things up a lot in the next few weeks.

I watched this episode tonight, and it got me to thinking ... Has anyone else here read the book Castaways by Brian Keene? The action is set on an island, with a Survivor-like show called Castaways. Just like Survivor, they have teams who fight challenges against each other, vote people off, they have camera crews and stuff. And most of the competitors are based on hosts/judges of other reality shows (Paula, Randy, Simon, & Ryan from AI, Jeff from Survivor, Gordon Ramsey, etc.).

Only, one of them is a serial killer. And the uninhabited island ... isn't.

It was the first Keene book I read, and I haven't been able to see Survivor in the same way since then.

Just curious, since I was thinking about it, and Halloween is coming soon.
