Doctor Who Reference Last Starfighter

I was watching the 25th aniversery edition DVD of "The Last Starfighter" yesterday and I noticed this interesting billboard in the last part of the movie...

Now, obviously this can be seen as a coincidence but given this is a science fiction movie and the spelling of Dalek isn't very common it could be a Doctor Who reference. A friend of mine did point out that it's not spelled the same way but never the less it did stand out to me. Oh and finally, in the audio commentary it wasn't mentioned. So I just wanted to know if anyone else had seen this.

The image it's self or the reference? If it's the reference then it's kind of obvious. Dalek comprises the first five letters of the name.

I think someone in the movie said the word "who" a few times, too. Clearly that was a reference to Doctor Who. There were also lots of screaching sounds and, in at least one scene, a screwdriver sitting on someone's table in the background. Again, another clear reference to the Doctor's sonic screwdriver!

Yeah...

No.

Hey, there is no need to be a smart ass about it. I saw the word Dalek in the billboard and thought there could be a connection. If there isn't then fine but I wasn't reading in between the lines.

Don't take it so hard. There seems to be an attitude of "permanent snark" on this board from time to time.

Me, i saw it right away (and if someone else can come up with a better origin for the name Dalecki's, feel free). That said, I'm more inclined to file it under coincidence then an intentional homage.

THAT SAID, if I recall correctly, Last Starfighter was made at the time the rights holders to the Dalek name were being particularly anal, so it could have been munged accordingly for the 5 or 10 people in the film's target audience who'd catch it.

Next thing I know, you'll be telling me that The Last Starfighter's Centauri wasn't named after The Curse of Peladon's Alpha Centauri!
