Stupid Products People Buy

I bought this:

I don't know why. It was only $1.99.

grated cheese. :wtf: It costs nearly half as much again, just buy cheese and grate it you lazy sod.

Not always true, actually, not around here anyway. So it becomes the opposite, if you wanted grated cheese, why buy blocks of cheese when it you can get it pre-grated?

The biggest reason to not buy pre-grated cheese is because it has preservatives in it that give it a funky taste, and agents in it to prevent it from clumping. Beyond the taste, pre-grated cheese also does not melt nearly as well as freshly grated/shredded cheese (due to the anti-clumping agents).

Don't believe me? Simple test -- take a few handfuls of Tostitos and arrange them in a baking dish. Top with pre-grated cheese.

Do the same, then, with a similar dish and freshly grated cheese.

Bake them. I guarantee you that the freshly grated cheese will melt far better than the pre-grated stuff. It also tastes much, much better.

Yeah, it's two bucks more for a block of sharp cheddar than it is for a bag of grated stuff, and it can cost much more to get a wedge of good Parmesan cheese as opposed to a tube of dry Kraft junk ... but the difference in taste and texture is incredibly worth it.

Anything by Microsoft

Funny. Though to be completely fair, Vista is incredibly good now, and I'm really enjoying Windows 7. I miss Mac OS X for some reasons (I went back to a Windows laptop after having three successive MacBook Pros shit the bed on me), but I have no problem switching between the two operating system.

^ I bought one of those jugs with the filter, anybody know how to get the fluoride out?

Distil it. Or, just drink it with fluoride in it. It's good for you. Drinking pure distilled water (pretty much the only way to remove trace minerals like fluoride) is bad for you and messes up your cells' osmotic balance, and can cause them to rupture. The body is designed to work best with water with ionic content.

I suspect there may be tablets/filters out there than can do this. But, really, fluoride is harmless.

On bottled water: I'll admit that buying those gallon jugs of filtered water that cost like $2 is fine. Buying the fancy-shmancy mountain [municipal water in some crap-hole town] 8-oz bottles of water for $3? STUPID!

It is better than harmless, it does you good, but if you're so neurotic you don't want no damn government chemicals, you can either distil every drop you drink or purchase an activated aluminium filter which will extract it. They cost more than $30 a pop and must be regularly replaced, but they'll take out that socialist fluoride.

According to the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting, my city (Dubuque, Iowa) has the fifth-best tasting municipal water in the world.

I'll take it.

Ah, but what about freshly grated Velveeta? It's cheap, melts easily, and doesn't require refrigeration prior!

I buy grated cheese because I don't own a cheese grater, and I'm lazy. Also, if I grated the cheese myself, that would mean I'd have to CLEAN the cheese grater, and as a general rule I hate doing dishes.

Also, I've found that it usually costs about the same as a block of cheese.

Plus, you can get those flavored grated cheeses, like Pizza and Taco! :p

Aside from the reasons Timby mentioned I'll say that fresh-grated cheese just simply tastes better. Shredded cheese is small and has a high surface-to-mass ratio which means the flavorful oils dry out sooner, compared to whole blocks of cheese the "outside" may loose its flavor but the cheese beneath that surface layer is still going to have all of its flavorful oils. Fresh-shredded cheese just simply tastes better.

All said, I admit to at times using pre-shredded cheese simply for convience even though I have a grater and prefer fresh-grated cheese. I mean, when I'm making a quesadilla for lunch the last thing I want to do is dirty up and have to clean a cheese-grater for a simple quick-meal that's going to take me all of five minutes to cook.

^ I'm trying so very hard here. He just gives me so many opportunities!

Do you just peruse food-related threads and try to hurt my brain?

Whyfor do you do such a thing? :(

Also, if I grated the cheese myself, that would mean I'd have to CLEAN the cheese grater

Before you grate cheese, spray the grater very lightly with non-stick spray. Grate your cheese. Put it on your dish. Prior to enjoying said dish, throw your grater under hot water from the faucet. Rinse all sides, and all of a sudden, well, shit, no cleaning involved.
