A translation company is looking to recruit Glaswegian interpreters to help business clients who are baffled by the local dialect.

Today Translations placed an advert in The Herald newspaper on Tuesday seeking speakers of "Glaswegian English".

Successful candidates, who could earn up to £140 a day, must understand "vocabulary, accent and nuances".

The firm said, so far, 30 people had applied for the positions - some of them in Glaswegian.
Well, anything to boost business in Scotland's biggest city, I guess. Let's hope they don't provide their service with a Glasgow smile...

This reminds me of an older story where an NHS trust provided a pamphlet with South Yorkshire phrases translated into the Queen's English. Champion. :bolian:

My wife has just completed a BA hons in Scottish Cultural studies which included Old Scots, Orcadian & Shetlandic. Perhaps they should've included modern dialects she could've applied:).

I agree with anything that boosts business in Glasgow and anywhere else in Scotland.

I know that in the early days of white settlement in Australia, military officers who officated during trials often had to use translators to understand what convicts were saying because, even though the convicts were technically speaking English, the officers couldn't understand them because the convicts spoke so many different dialects.

The convicts were able to understand the officers however because the lower classes understood 'upper-class prat'.

I think you mean Glesga kiss...if you want to be more up to date with urban slang, the Glasgow smile would have been more associated with the razor gangs of the 50/60 in Glasgow.

Anyway either would definitely not be a very nice way to conclude their translations, i just hope nobody asks to see malky or chib.
