Chris Pine as Jack Ryan

So after Moscow is destroyed in a nuclear attack that the United States, led by President Jack Ryan, could have prevented, a furious Russian man will swear vengeance and travel back in time to the Cold War and try to kill young Jack Ryan and destroy the United States, thereby saving Russia and his family. Right?

I like this casting decision. I wonder what book they're going to readapt unless they're just going for a straight reboot with an original script which would be interesting and how Tom Clancy would feel about that?

And Jack Ryan will be appointed captain of a naval destroyer right out of the academy.

This will be an original screenplay with no barring to any Tom Clancy novel.

He's a good pick only if they actually bother to follow through with a full series of films.

Oh, and Affleck was fairly decent in Sum Of All Fears but I guess I only think that because I'm not cool enough to dislike him.

Affleck was decent in The Sum of All Fears. Then again he's pretty "decent" in everything that he does. I just couldn't buy him as a younger Harrison Ford. Chris Pine, on the other hand, is someone I can buy as a young Harrison Ford type. He's got the charisma and physicality to (hopefully) pull it off, while I felt Affleck had neither.

Yeah, but it's not like Harrison Ford was anything like Alec Baldwin.

To be fair, Affleck wasn't meant to be the young Harry, SOAF wasn't a prequel or sequel to the previous Ryan movies. Ryan was a married man in the previous movies but he was only going out with his g/f in Sum. But Sum was clearly set in the present day, not in the 1980s.

Even the two with Ford not only replaced Baldwin with Ford, but recast Mrs Ryan too (Gates McFadden being replaced by Ann Archer). There's never been any strict continuity between the movies. You may as well complain that Daniel Craig isn't convincing as a young Sean Connery or Pierce Brosnan.

I'm no fan of the books but it seems odd to use the character in an original movie that isn't adapted from a book. Wouldn't it be cheaper to invent their own Ryan-like character? It's not like the character is of James Bond-like iconic status that his name attached to a new movie will guarantee bums on seats. The other movies have been pretty successful but hardly smash hits. Will a Ryan adventure not based on a Clancy novel pull in hardcore fans of the series? Doubtful.

Incidentally, if Pine plays Ryan, this means the character will have been played by The Shadow, Han Solo, Indiana Jones, Daredevil and Captain Kirk.

I'm fine with the idea of Chris Pine as Jack Ryan. The choice seems fairly obvious in hindsight since Paramount has him "in house" already so to speak.

Affleck's turn in Sum was good enough and the movie did decent. I guess the problem was Affleck didn't want to do another or Paramount drug their indecisive feet.

The "Jack Ryan" franchise is being rebooted now for the 3rd time. I just hope if Pine is good in the role that we get a few movies. We could've had 3 with Ford but Paramount tossed out that ageist crap and didn't want Ford back even though the films were hits and he was only in his late 40s/early 50s.

My guess is they just want to add Tom Clancy's to the title like they do with Ian Flemming. Unless they want to do a 70s or 80s period piece the entire Clancyverse has been overtaken by events. However the remaining fans base who would be upset about things like turning Islamic terrorist into Nazis is old so a reboot is possible.

Pine is a decent enough choice, although I have a bad feeling about this project. I really hope they don't make Jack Ryan into some sort of uber action hero and dumb the plot down to James Bond Level.

The Ford movies were okay, but the only great film of the bunch was Red October, which is one of my favorite movies.

And James Earl Jones will make an appearance because his younger self stranded Jack on a lifeboat.

Dear. God. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I came into this fandom by watching The Hunt For Red October on the big screen! I still don't understand why Alec Baldwin couldn't do the next two movies! And Affleck is already the reboot Jack Ryan! In the books Ryan was deputy DCI, not just an analyst! I had to watch Sum about five times before i got used to Affleck in the role!

Chris Freaking Pine?!!! That blonde metrosexual wuss JJ Abrams thinks is James Kirk as JACK RYAN???

Oh, HELLS NO!!

But Red October is 20 years old, and Alec Baldwin is twice the man he used to be :p so it makes sense to do a reboot. And I agree it's more a "threeboot" since they already tried with Affleck, but it bombed. So I see this sort of, well, Star Trek 11 to Nemesis, really.

I think Pine would make a great choice, and I suppose if he wants to avoid typecasting as Kirk, the way to do it is get identified with another longstanding pop culture character at the same time (worked for Harrison Ford, who managed to avoid typecasting as Han Solo by snagging Indiana Jones, not to mention Jack Ryan). Question is whether Paramount will allow it. After all one would assume Trek 12 would be its priority, and there's the risk the Ryan film might conflict in terms of production schedule.

Then again, Ford managed to balance Han Solo and Indiana Jones at the same time.

So can-x the reboot and do Executive Orders and The Bear and The Dragon and bring Baldwin back as President Jack Ryan (which would be such a fantastic counterpoint to the lightweight we've got in office now...>sigh<).

Personally, I didn't hate Sum. It just bothers me when a movie changes so radically from the book. (One of the funniest things i've ever heard was Clancy's commentary on the DVD, which begins: "Hi, I'm Tom Clancy, the guy who wrote the book that everybody ignored.")

:wtf:

Then what is the point of making this movie? Just to make a video game version of it or something?
