Naked scanner in airport trial

A trial of a scanner that produces "naked" images of passengers has begun at Manchester Airport.

The authorities say it will speed up security checks by quickly revealing any concealed weapons or explosives.

But the full body scans will also show up breast enlargements, body piercings and a clear black-and-white outline of passengers' genitals.

The airport has stressed that the images are not pornographic and will be destroyed straight away.

Sarah Barrett, head of customer experience at the airport, said most passengers did not like the traditional "pat down" search.

At Manchester Airport's Terminal 2, where the machine has been introduced, passengers will no longer have to remove their coats, shoes and belts as they go through security checks.

Ms Barrett said: "This scanner completely takes away the hassle of needing to undress."

Ms Barrett said the black-and-white image would only be seen by one officer in a remote location before it was deleted.

"The images are not erotic or pornographic and they cannot be stored or captured in any way," she said.
Passengers could refuse to be scanned, she added.

The scanners cost £80,000 each. They work by beaming electromagnetic waves on to passengers while they stand in a booth. A virtual three-dimensional image is then created from the reflected energy.

Ms Barrett said the radiation levels were "super safe".

She said: "Passengers can go through this machine 5,000 times a year each without worrying. The amount of radiation transmitted is tiny."

The Department for Transport will decide whether to install them permanently in about a year's time.

The scanners, made by RapiScan Systems, have already been tried at Heathrow Airport from 2004 to 2008.

A BAA Heathrow spokeswoman said the technology had been "very effective" and the airport operator was considering possible wider use of it in the future.

The scanners are being gradually rolled out at airports across the US, after use in Los Angeles and New York.

Sounds good to me, if it means I don't have to take half my clothes off, and wait for everyone else to do the same i'm all for it.

They were talking about these not long after 9/11, I think. The version I heard about at the time automatically fuzzed out nipples and genitals, though.

Is anyone else (like me) thinking of that gag from the beginning of Airplane II? :vulcan:

But anyway, embarrassment aside, it looks pretty impressive. A neat alternative to being prodded and stripped. :D

Now all they need to do is devise technology to make all the molecules in one's undergarments leap simultaneously one foot to the left. :bolian:

Ugh, there goes your most intimate privacy....I prefer the pat down to anyone seeing my bits....

It's like a strip search without the actual stripping. I think it's still pretty degrading and an invasion of my privacy. I prefer the conventional security measures.
These scanners caused some uproar here in Germany and the minister of interior was quick to assure everyone that they won't be introduced here. It seems, though, that there won't be many places left to go to soon.

I dunno about intimate privacy. Coming back from Malta a couple of weeks back I set off the metal detector like I always do. The security officer gave me a good patting down that included a thorough examination of my boobs, and she shoved her metal detector wand right against my personal space!

They're pretty rough on British airports. I noticed that when I flew home from Scotland recently.

We should get a group of people together to walk through the scanner all at once and start with the jumping jacks

Look on the bright side. It'll finally address the Lady Gaga question once and for all. :bolian:

I don't think they can see your face while they do this. Can they? And even if they do, they'll just see through it, to your skull. It won't look like you. So it's not like they're seeing *you* specifically. Just a bunch of random naked people.

In other words, a typical Thursday night for some of us :shifty:

Something like this :)

The scanner cuts off faces before sending the image to the operator, so they just see naked bodies.

Plus, the intent is I believe to offer the pat down as an alternative if you aren't comfortable with the scanner, at least for now.
