Two Deaths that did not quite add up

Garak007

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
I am talking about the deaths of Data & Jadzia.

Jadzia first.

Ok you had Worf's reaction to her death that was understandable. But Sisko's reaction was like what the hell Dax can go on and bring on the next host. Yet we had a massive build up of their friendship through the series before but I suppose you kind of can dismiss this as he could of continuing his friendship from a previous host. I don't buy that. This was kind of sloppy writing but not has worse as Data's death.

Data's Death

Easy this one. Where was Geordi's reaction. Best of pals most way though the whole TNG run and all we had was him holding onto Troi for a brief moment and most of the reactions was coming from Picard's POV. Sloppy writing again. Ok Picard did help him in his trek to become more human maybe but most of the friendship I felt was with him and Geordi IMO

For Sisko, he befrinded two hosts of Dax already, not just Jadzia but with Curzon. Remember how he kept calling a young woman in her 20s "old man".... I'm sure he did value his friendship with Jadzia. He was upset enough to take the baseball with him when he went to Earth after her death.

I may be remembering this incorrectly, but didn't Sisko resign after that for a while? It seems to me like that would have shown being very deeply affected. Also, I can see how he would have been numbed by so much death at that point. He may have just internalized it all.
Just my 2 cents.

With Jadzia I was more unhappy with the fact that they brought in another cute model instead of a good actor to play the new host, of course I didn't like the fact that Terry Farrell left the show after I had grown attached to the character she played. Nicole de Boer was a mismatch for me, what they should have done was bring in a male actor to play the new host someone with more character would have been better.

Data's death was noble and I understand Spiner's stated reason to end the Data character since he no longer had any more room to grow, however I would have preferred if they had given more time at the end of the film for reflection of Data's life and his sacrifice. It would have certainly made me and my fellow Trekkies/Trekkers happier, Data was almost as important as Spock, and we were all very much attached to his character.

This. Dax was his mentor and then his close friend and trusted advisor.

And as a sidenote, I still remember when S7 was first beginning and Ezri seemed to have some chemistry with Jake, there was a rumor going around about a potential Jake/Ezri relationship and what that would mean for Ben especially. Ten years later, and I still really wish that had happened. :sigh:

They couldn't bring in another male character, as that would have left Kira as the only female on the show. Personally, I thought Nicole de Boer played Ezri much more realistically than Jadzia, as a joined Trill, who after Looking for Par'Mach was little more than Worf's .. er... partner.

Hmmm, the slashfic possibilities :p

Ezri: Hmmm, you're as good as your dad.
Jake:
Ezri: Don't worry, that was when I was Jadzia.
Jake: :wtf:
Ezri: Hehehe, you're so easy to mess with

Nicole got better the second half of the season. During the first half I did not like how they were writing her character.

Oh, and any thread about bad deaths in ST has to include Trip and These Are The Voyages". :scream:

The Data thing kind of bugged me, too, and I think the whole just suffered from being rushed and feeling tacked-on. It could have worked, but it clearly didn't.

Haha, and can't you just see Dax doing that?

She can also reminisce about when he was in diapers or about his dad's "conquests" before Jennifer came along.

And of course the Dax-Ben dynamic would be lovely. Here's a character that's gone from irascible mentor to trusted friend to... dating his son? :wtf:

That never happened. It was a bad dream.

Ah, my favourite 'it never happened' romance. I liked that Ezri got with Bashir, but if I had to choose, I would prefer Jake. It would be interesting, the two characters are similar age, especially as Sisko's best friend is now dating his son. Unfortunately, the gutless writers killed all that with one line at the end of Afterimage, and so reduced Jake to the status of background extra for the rest of the season.

Oh, there's a lot more wrong with that whole idea than just the wake...

Worf and Jadzia's death, we see the Defiant dock at the station, air lock opens and Worf comes running out -- stop. I forget the maximum range of the combine transporters of the Defiant and the station, but Worf wasted two plus minutes waiting on the docking. Sisko should have ordered him off the ship.

Spock's resurrection felt like a cheat. Don't get me wrong, unlike some of the original players, every time Nimoy portrays Spock he gets better. Spock's death had meaning, there should not have been a reset.

I would say that the deaths that bothered me the most were Data's and Trip's because they both were...well, just there. It didn't seem to fit and they both inspired "WTF?" reactions from me.

I think Jadzia's was handled well. Sisko was peeling potatoes in his father's restaurant when he first meets Ezri - so I think there were real consequences in his character as there were with Worf.

Yeah, the ending of the episode (and the season) was really meloncoloy with Ben going back to Earth and hanging out with his dad at the familly restauraunt. I forget how much time passed between the end of S6 and S7 but once he met the new Dax he could move from mourning to "Hello, I have the same slug your freind did in my neck!" weirdness.

With Data you knew it was going to happen at some point becuase it was hinted. Trip, Trip died???

Oh yeah I remember now, in that joke of an insult to the cast of Enterprise epsoide and so called end :scream:

Data's death was totally senseless. So was Trip's death in Tatv it was just lousy pitiful excuse of a finale.:klingon: Thank goodness we got the Enterprise relaunch books and a new novel coming out next week.

Yes! I'm glad someone else thinks that!
