Boyzone singer Stephen Gately has died suddenly at the age of 33 while on holiday in Majorca.

Spanish police said he died on Saturday and that there were no signs of suspicious circumstances. But the cause of death is not yet known.

Gately was on holiday with his long-term partner Andy Cowles. His bandmates said they were "completely devastated" and are now travelling to Majorca.

The Irish band had six UK number one hits in the 1990s and reformed in 2007.
Another pop star death, and one that was, to everyone's minds at least, completely unexpected. I wouldn't be surprised if there was after all a suspicious, or at least unusual, cause for his death.

But in any case, RIP sir. :(

What the fuck is Boyzone? Is that like the daycare center at the corporate office of NAMBLA?

Boyzone never conquered the US (except I believe for "No Matter What") but they were huge here. Think Backstreet Boys or N'Sync for the right vibe.

I was very shocked to hear this today, he was still very young! And I'd been hearing rumblings of a Boyzone reunion tour a la Take That. But without Gately, I have to agree with the guy on BBC News earlier who said it would just be Ronan Keating with some backing singers.

Incidentally, "No Matter What" (a cover of the song from the Lloyd Webber / Steinman musical version of "Whistle Down The Wind") was one of the few Boyzone songs where Gately had lead vocals (still with additional vocals from main man Ronan Keating).

Hmm. Interesting that quite a few of Boyzone's best known songs were covers.

It's also been announced just now that Louis Walsh (who managed Boyzone) will not appear on this evening's X Factor.

'Rumblings of'? They reformed, toured and released a record ages ago.

I absolutely hated their music but he seemed like a nice enough guy. And it was undoubtedly a brave move for a gay member of a boyband to come out a and when he did. RIP Stephen.

Irish solicitor Gerald Kean, a spokesman for Gately's family, told BBC News: "There's no foul play involved and it's not suicide. It's just a tragic accident is what we've been told and we're happy that that is correct information.
"There is nothing untoward, it's not drugs, we don't believe, it's not suicide, it's not murder, it's not a fight. That's what we've been told."

Sounds to me like another wanking accident. I think he was doing a Carradine

Well that completely passed me by  Clearly, my Boyzone fan credentials are somewhat lacking. Maybe because I only like one of their songs, and Meatloaf did it better.

A lack of Boyzone fan credentials is nothing to be ashamed of! And I only know about the comeback, because, sadly, there was no escaping it here in Ireland. Actually, the comeback single wasn't too bad, or wouldn't have been if anyone other than corncrake soundalike Ronan Keating had sung it.

But to be fair, I saw a few interviews with them all since they reformed and they all seem like nice guys, mostly self-deprecating and aware that they're not exactly Led Zep or the Rolling Stones in terms of status and cred (with the possible exception of the somewhat deluded Ronan). Gotta feel sorry for them.

In death, Gately has managed to strike the Daily Mail quite a resounding blow, and for that we thank him.

Fail columnist Jan Moir has sparked fury over a piece she wrote about the singer's death in which she displayed a deep set homophobia and tried to portray the singer's death from a perfectly natural pulmonary oedema as 'not natural by any yardstick' and connected to his wanton (read: gay) lifestyle and rumours (sorry, REVELATIONS!) that he smoked some cannabis on the night of his death (cannabis being such a well known cause of pulmonary oedema  ).

The Press Complaints Commission site is still experiencing periodic downtime from the volume of traffic.

She's such a cunt. That article was disgusting the things she tried to imply about his death. Then makes a statement "apologising" but then tries to make out the outcry was "mischief" that was orchestrated.
And I thought I couldn't be any more disgusted by The Daily Mail.

It is now the most complained about article in PCC history, according to the BBC.

Twitter has certainly been all ablaze over the row.

I think Charlie Brooker might have helped...

From Charlie Brooker's Column

Jan's paper, the Daily Mail, absolutely adores it when people flock to Ofcom to complain about something offensive, especially when it's something they've only learned about second-hand via an inflammatory article in a newspaper. So it would undoubtedly be delighted if, having read this, you paid a visit to the Press Complaints Commission website (www.pcc.org.uk) to lodge a complaint about Moir's article on the basis that it breaches sections 1, 5 and 12 of its code of practice.

^ To be fair, Brooker or no Brooker, I'd have complained about that article if I'd read it independently, and I'm quite thick-skinned to the Fail's output by now. It is whole new levels of disgusting, especially that she is actually defending it.
