Barack Obama Wins The Nobel Peace Prize

It is a bit soon, I think. Give him at least 2 years in office. Carter and Gore had at least been at their causes for several years.

Good for him, and the USA, i guess. It doesn't matter too much to me. He has taken a more 'diplomatic' approach to hostile nations and doesn't beat the drum of war when talking to/with them, and that does count for something, but I tend to agree that it's too soon.

It'd be more interesting to see if he kept the 'peace' as Iran gets nuclear before giving him the award, as either us or Israel (I'm hoping its Israel) will probably have to take military action. But more power to him I guess.

What I find distasteful is the republican reaction. First they were openly rooting against the USA getting the Olympics, and now they are furious and livid because our president is getting the award. Its like, once we got a Democrat president, all of a sudden, patriotism went out the window and they are rooting for the US to fail at everything, so Obama will be embarrassed. Whatever happened to just issuing a quick congratulations and then refocusing on whatever domestic agenda you're using to combat Obama's agenda?

I don't get this. This award is about work done throughout the years and should be kept as prestigious as that. What has Obama done in several years to deserve this? Just 2 years ago we didn't even know who Obama was, unless you paid attention to his Democratic Convention speech a few years ago.

I find Gore's award preposterous because he doesn't practice what he preaches, he's not a scientist, and his movie is riddled with false information. How stupid does one have to be to believe that polar bears are trapped on a shrinking ice floe?

While I think the probability is high that Obama can accomplish some great things, I don't get this. He's actually accomplished nothing - there are still 2 wars being fought, Iran is still rattling its nuclear saber, and the Middle East as a whole is still as turbulent as it was on January 19th.

It sounds like a participation award.

From the article:

Asked why the prize had been awarded to Mr Obama less than a year after he took office, Nobel Committee head Thorbjoern Jagland said: "It was because we would like to support what he is trying to achieve".
Some said they saw the prize as a way of encouraging the US leader early in his presidency.

This is my problem too.

I've always seen the Nobel Peace Prize as the biggest award you could be given, a reward for amazing work done.

What are they going to do if he does achieve world peace? Give it to him again?

Yeah I'm having issues with this as well. I'm not crazy anti-Obama but he wouldn't have even been on my radar for this one.

He made a very nice speech after the hard position the Nobel committee put him in. I had no doubt Mr ME-ME-ME would keep it but saying he would accept it on behalf of the leaders was a nice touch even though transparent.

I liked that he mentioned others that the committee should have considered first. Too bad he ruined it by going into the global warming hoax.

This award might have actually meant something had he gotten it a few years from now after having actually done something for peace.

The nominations closed on President Obama's tenth day in office. He won because he is our savior!

Because of who he is we give him glory.
Because of who he is we give him fame.
Because of who he is we lift our arms in praise
Yes we worship Him because of who he is!

Having the current President get nominated isn't unusual. It actually happens every year.

But this time the people voted for our Messiah!

Star Wolf, one or two shots are fine.. then it becomes trolly

Nope. The only task the President has is to do is "support and defend the constitution of the United States". Anything else is extra.

What has Obama done in several years to deserve this?

for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.
And one more time for the cheap seats

"FOR HIS EXTRAORDINARY EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMACY AND COOPERATION BETWEEN PEOPLES"

One could argue that examples of this are:

-Speech to the muslim world
-Tone of UN speeches
-Engaging North Korea for hostages
-Less aggressive tone in negotiations with Iran
-Russia and Poland

Basically, everything Republicans criticized as conciliatory, apologizing for america, weakening America, etc.

He had to have done those things to be criticized for them.

Anyways, I just dont think of it as a bad thing that the rest of the world seems to have this fawning irrational love for our president. A little puzzling, but not bad.

This is a joke, but so was Gore.

Did you hear their reasons? It's pretty much "America has a president who isn't a dumb fucker, and therefor wins".

I'm smarter than Bush, I don't hate Muslims, can I get a million dollars too?

Since nominations had to be postmarked by February 1, I guess he must have accomplished something I missed during his first 12 days in office.

-Less aggressive tone in negotiations with Iran

Oh yes, that's working real well, innit?
What, did you expect negotiations to retroactively eliminate that secret nuclear facility?

In a word, YES! If President Obama had managed to convince Ahmadinejad (more importantly the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei) to get rid of Iran's nuclear program that would have been an actual accomplishment worthy of the Nobel Prize.

Whoa Nellie
