Has 40 years of ''The PILL'' turned woman off ''manly'' men??

I suspect this has nothing to do with the Pill and everything to do with demographic shifts. Big Media has realized young/teen girls have a lot of money to burn and that's who they want to appeal to.
 
What is considered beautiful/appealing in a society is subject to change. Societies are constantly changing. Look at the famous actresses of the silent movie era. At the time they were the type of woman considered desirable. Today, it's a whole different type of woman. The same applies to men.

Also, the Daily Mail is a rather despicable tabloid and not the best of sources, to put it mildly...
 
I think the Daily Mail is once again hypothesising way ahead of the data.

The research itself makes no claims about the changing face of male celebrity - that seems to be all the Mail's work, and its ignoring the fact that myriad social influences contribute to ideals of masculinty, and also to the way in which the "celebrity" market is structured. (It's quite well documented that young girls will often tend toward crushes on 'baby-faced' celebrities. So even if we could trace a change in the 'masculinity' of popular celebrities, changing market demographics are just as possible a reason.)

I don't buy the sweeping generalisation about the decline from rugged manly men to Zac Effron though. They're cherry-picking to suit their argument.

I found a bit more about the original paper here. Even this seems to have some dodgy preconceptions about "masculinity" as some sort of absolute. However, it puts a greater focus on the question of choosing a genetically dissimilar mate. They suggest that women's attraction to men with dissimilar genes to theirs isn't constant, but triggered by hormones during ovulation. Ergo, it doesn't happen when you're on the pill. That's more interesting than the hair-length of male celebrities trend.

So far they don't appear to have the data to confirm any of this though.
 
I'm waiting for back hair to become popular... then I'll clean up at the clubs! :guffaw:

I think as technology improves, education improves, hygiene becomes a defacto staple in our every day lives, and more importantly, society knocks down old stereotypes, well then it's natural to be attracted to those who take better care of themselves. It's not for everybody, but that does seem to be the trend over the past decade or so.

Taking care of yourself and having good hygiene has nothing to do with not being manly, take Sean Connery as James Bond for example.

Also, given the swooning by female fans of Mike Rowe from "Dirty Jobs" I don't think traditional manly men have anything to worry about.

Shoot, I've been ON the Pill for over 20yrs and I still prefer masculine men--like my Hubby.

In high school, I couldn't understand why these girls wanted half-grown boys. Skinny legs, no muscle, unfinished. The guy I thought was cute was tall, broadshouldered, medium/large build but not heavy.

Hmmm...sounds a lot like Hubby. I guess I'm pretty consistent over 30yrs.
